Hi.

I know this seems odd, but I was wondering if there was an African-American woman -- or hair stylist or the like -- out there who could help me with a question. You can PM me for more info.

Thanks,

Not odd - Ask your question outright. I'm intrigued and I bet others are. Also, I know a few people who could probably answer a question or two for you. :)

Okay, here's the question

I'm writing a story with a female African-American character. So for I've only noted this by describing her hair in cornrow braids. Part of this is that I'm just not a hair person and couldn't begin to tell you what hair styles are popular for any type of hair or in any ethnic group. But I'd like to be accurate; if no one wears cornrows any more, please tell me and suggest some other hair style. I intend to add a bit more description, but the hair is important, too.

If that makes any sense, and someone could answer, I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
PennLady

That should depend entirely on the character, I think. African Americans are no likelier to all have the same hairstyle than the rest of us. The only difference is that she'd have to put more work into straightening her hair if she wears it straight (which to me seems more like the norm than not) and that that comes with a need of special care against dryness (just as your hair would if you permed, bleached, or otherwise treated it with chemicals.)

This is just one among countless pages I pulled off google. You can easily find as detailed tips as you wish if you plan on showing her iron her hair every morning or something, or you can simply give her any hairstyle you want without unnecessary discussions. There's a wealth of into out there in any case. Good luck!

People who live in hot, humid climates tend to develop what's called a 'peppercorn hair pattern.' (Examples are Negros, busmen and the Negritos of at least the Anadaman Islands.) The peppercorn hair pattern consists of clumps of hair roots, surrounded by very narrow sweat channels. The practice of cornrowing developed from separating the hair from a peppercorn clump into a braid of hair.

Negro hair is peppercorn pattern, with very curly (kinked) hair shafts. Sometimes the kinky hair is straightened by use of a 'relaxer' chemical.

Negro hair is shaped more like a ribbon, rather than the cylindrical shape of European hair. Brushing tends to damage Negro hair. The hair stylist I talked to some years back advised his clients to use combs he had obtained from visits to Africa, rather than a hair brush.

(I'm not a Negro. I grew up, or whatever, as Whi' Boy, in South Central Los Angeles. I have had a lot of interaction with Negros, in my time. I use the term Negro, as I have been to South India, where I found people as black skinned as any African, however the Indian people were Caucasian. The bushmen of the Kalahari Desert are not Negro, but are/were obviously of a different race. There has been a lot of intermarriage between Negros and bushmen.)

Hmmm

I think I'm not phrasing things well.

My character is a late-20s black American professional woman living in New York City. She comes into a bar to meet her friend, who owns and runs the bar, and since I'm bad at providing physical descriptions anyway, the only thing I say is that she flicks some cornrow braids out of her way.

This is very short-hand for getting my point across. So I was wondering: do black American women wear cornrows (anymore)? Is there another hairstyle that's popular at the moment?
