It depends on how personal you want the gift to be. I use the Amazon thing for nieces and nephews who I haven't seen for a while.

Campbells sells a soup mug set that would be great for a college student -- it comes with a 20 oz mug and two cans of Campbell's soup (Tomato soup if I remember correctly.)
