Well, when they come up with a reasonable test, I'm sure they'll adjust things. Right now, though, there's no way to know that you haven't already been exposed to every harmful strain out there, so you'd possibly just be contributing to rising healthcare costs, but taking up a doctor's time with something that might not benefit you in any way. Afterall, I'd assume that it works similar to other viruses, anyway. Once you've had a couple strains, you should have plenty of antibodies that will likely kill whatever strain you come into contact with. That's why during early vaccine days, they injected people with Cow Pox, knowing they'd probably get sick. It stopped them from getting the much more dangerous Small Pox, though.

It's quite a shame that they didn't do the testing on both sexes right off the bat as males are often carriers. However, since the virus only rarely causes cancer in males they decided to just focus on females. Of course, people are being made so paranoid about vaccines these days that it's sometimes impossable to convince people to get any vaccines.

Nah, the muscle soreness isn't too bad, especially if you relax when you're getting it done.

I'm going tomorrow, too, and weekly until I have the baby. If you get nervous, you can always think of a terribly pregnant Litster getting a similar exam and be thankful you can sit yourself up afterward - I either have to swing my legs down like a teeter totter or have someone help haul my torso up.

Seriously, if you think of something that would make you more comfortable (like even a nurse holding your hand or talking to you during the exam), ask for it. In most cases, they're more than happy to take every reasonable measure to make the visit go as smoothly as possible, and the worst they can do is decline your request(s). I'm sure you'll be just fine and come out of it wondering what you were so nervous about!

Did the doctor's office tell you that you need to come with a full bladder, or did you get that advice from elsewhere? I've never been told that for a regular exam (although it's standard procedure for vaginal and certain abdominal ultrasounds, and they're very specific about how much you need to drink prior to those). If the doctor may want a urine sample (some do, some don't), you obviously shouldn't pee right before you go into your appointment, but you shouldn't need a full bladder for a sample or the exam. In fact, they usually ask if you need to empty your bladder before you get undressed for the pelvic exam.

If you're in doubt, call and ask this afternoon or tomorrow morning when they open, assuming your appointment isn't first thing. The receptionist(s) should know what you need to do for your type of appointment. If that fails, go in with a reasonable amount in your bladder (unless you're told otherwise). If you find yourself waiting and about to float away, let the staff know so you can provide a sample or whatever just in case the doctor wants one.

It was mentioned a couple times in the thread. But alright^^ If it isnt needed for normal than I should be fine sense this is a normal one. Just getting it while I'm getting myself birth control to lessen the awfullyness that is cramps

Sugar, as SweetErika said, unless the office told you to come in with a full bladder (and they would have), don't.

For any questions, you might want to call the office tomorrow morning, just to make sure. Again, as SweetE mentioned, the receptionist(s) will know how to prepare for your type of exam. Otherwise, breathe! Every woman goes through this once a year, and it's really not a big deal. If you feel nervous, SPEAK UP - they want you at ease. If you don't want to know how they are going to examine you, let them know. If you do (I'm one of those, for example) tell them and they will be more than happy to oblige.

I'm one of those to. I hate people not telling me what they're doing, more so when it envolves me. My dentist does that all the time. I just hope my doctor and nurse will be good and nice'n stuff. I've heard stories from those unfortunate to have not nice ones.

You aren't kidding! Actually, if I had my druthers, I'd prefer it first get approved for women beyond the 26 year old cut off. I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Merck's Gardasil isn't the only vaccine out there, so perhaps you can find a clinical trial in your area. I'm in the fourth (and probably final) year of participation in a double blind study for women over 25.

Lunar, so sorry but I had to laugh when I read this... ah, the memories! We have all been there, dear. First time always sucks but it will be easier next... promise you!

My first time, the doctor said something like, "Well, most penises are a lot bigger than that," when I yelped during the manual exam.

She was right, of course, but there's generally a big difference between penetration during arousal and having a random clinician doing an exam.

At least you got your first exam over with and subsequent visits will likely be more comfortable. Some practitioners are just really bad at exams (and if you feel this lady is one of them, you should definitely try someone else in the future), but like sex, it can be tough to judge based solely on your first time when you're very nervous. Excellent gynecologists are in high demand and can be difficult to find, so you might have to try several-many in order to find one you really like.

Oh, and Sweet E, I do hope all things have been progressing well. It's got to be getting close by now. (sorry if I've missed updates elsewhere ).

The progress is a little slow for my taste, but it is happening. Now the challenge is finding a way to entice the little guy to come out--without raising my blood pressure--before I need to be induced.

I worked with a female doc once that had a rep with her patients of being pretty rough with the exam. Sometimes a male praticianer can be more gentle, sometimes not. If you are comfortable with the person during regular appointments, male or female, it's much easier. I know I wouldn't have made a "first time" comment, as I imagine it would only make you more nervous.
But, as the wonderful ladies have said above...it should be easier next time.

Well at least you know what it's like now! If it makes you feel any better, my first gyno was a little Chinese man (who was lovely). He took a look and said "Ah, you've been a good girl, then." and I was mortified! Probably ony said it for the benefit of my mother, who was standing right next to me.

Now my GP is also an OBGYN, so it's much easier. And mum is DEFINITELY nowhere near...

Sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience. Keep in mind that this was your first experience, you were nervous, tense, so senses would be heightened and looking for an excuse for discomfort. I am by no means trying to minimize what occurred, it was obviously not pleasant. You may want to look for a new doctor if you feel this one was too rough, inexperienced, or otherwise not to your liking. Not all doctors are alike, some are gentle and great, some are not. It is imperative that you have a doctor that you are comfortable with and trust.

I worked with another male PA once that was very religious. The nurses HATED going in to do pelvics with him as they said it was like watching a blind man play whack-a-mole. They said he got much better after he got married
I think it's just personality. If you're the type of provider that likes to take time, make your patients comfortable and be empathetic, then any exam is going to go better. If you're the "5 min in and out" type of provider....well then that's how the exam is going to be. Doesn't really matter what equip is between the provider's legs...it's what's between their ears
