That when the quarterback drops back about six feet behind the center to receive the snap. It is very common on obvious passing downs where the offense is using four or even five wide receivers. Since the QB is already in the pocket he can get the pass out to the receivers quicker than if he had to drop back with a five or seven step drop.

There is a variation where the running back lines up next to the QB and receives a handoff in a draw play. That is where the defensive linemen and linebackers are drawn in to the offensivelin thus giving the running back room to run for the first down marker.

Another effective trick play is where the RB lines up next to the QB and takes a direct snap from the center. While the defensive ine responds first to the QB, the tail back is out and gone running for the end zone. It is sort of like a single wing offense.
