He may yet be, but "Felony Battery" is enough to push his bail high enough to make bail-bondsmen think twice so they can take their time in deciding what else he can be charged with.

Personally, I think terminal stupidity should be on the list, too -- emphasis on the "Terminal" part.

Felony Batterey does seem kind of trivial. Why not ADW or Attempted Murder or something more solid. Multiple counts, of course.

How likely is it that a bondsman would be willing to bail him out? Or that somebody would be willing to put up the fee?

They can positively convict him on the Felony Battery counts. Felony Battery is a step above ADW and they may not be able to prove intent to kill with an attempted murder charge -- at least not initially.

(Assault is a threat, Battery is an action.)
