i am a big man
(yes i am)
and i have a big gun
got me a big old dick and i
i like to have fun
held against your forehead
i'll make you suck it
maybe i'll put a hole in your head
you know, just for the fuck of it
i can reduce you if i want
i can devour
i'm hard as fucking steal, and i've got the power
i'm every inch a man, and i'll show you somehow
me and my fucking gun
nothing can stop me now
shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot
me and my fucking gun
me and my fucking gun

-- Big Man with a Gun, Nine Inch Nails.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is black humor... If you don't get it, you never will.

Always a pleasure to see you, birdie.

 duck

I don't get it and I don't want to

No need to feel bad, I have copped and dealt with it

I guess it just goes to show how those lyricscan be interpreted with a difference in view point

Note to self: Never open stupid fucking threads like this one.

My mistake.

Gun control is using one's intelligence when possessing a gun. A free society is one where an individual's rights aren't restricted.

I have never killed anyone and I never will.

Fuck you and the sanctimonious, hypocritical, fucked-up bullshit horse you rode in on. You're so caught up in your own rhetoric and your own delusions that you don't see a thing. I bet you applauded when Ashcroft stepped in because more and more people would be safe from evil things.

You can't have it both ways. All people have rights or no people have rights. You can't have it so only the people you agree with have rights.

Thank you very much for insinuating that I was a dickhead compensating for penile incompetency with a gun because I was too stupid to realize what humanity is all about. Thank you for comparing me to the dregs of human society. Thank you for the blatant and inescapable fact that you think I'm the scum of the earth and that I'm nothing more than a piece of shit willing to butcher other people just because I feel inferior.

No wait. That's the gun doing all that. Duh. Sorry. Guns make people kill, forgot. Silly me. If there were no guns we'd all be happy and live peaceful lives. There'd be no one dying violently, no violent crime, no drive by shootings, no abuse. After all, governmental control of an individual's right to possess drugs worked so well.

Note to self: make sure not to post lyrics to "Jeremy" or "Glorified G" on the Lit BB

Yes... another person who took it too seriously folks.

Let me clarify: I'm not making a judgement on you or anybody else. I work with quite a few gun nuts and I agree, its the person, not the gun, that kills people. What you witnessed here is a play on words... *THAT* is the reason why I found it funny.

The *only* regret I have is that it hurt Todd, whom I asked immediately if he wanted me to take this down. He declined the offer.

What do I really think of guns? I think if they were a more accepted part of our culture that there would be less fucking crime in the city because all the criminals would be deathly afriad of getting their head blown off. I wish that each state had more control over its own gun laws - and the federal government less.

We've all got our pet issues and we've all got sore spots. I hit yours and you responded without thinking that there might be another explaination. I have an odd sense of humor, always have and will long after this thread passes into memory. I'm not leaving and I'm standing my ground. I'm not apollogizing, as I have done no wrong, and there is nothing you can do to make me back down from this position.

I try to respect you, as I do all lit member, but in all honestly I wonder sometimes if you deserve my respect. This is one of those times. I think we both got off on the wrong foot when we first met and this is a chance for you to put us back on the right one. The ball is in your court.

Great one BB

Good song with interesting word play in the lyrics as well.

It seems some failed to read to the bottom where it signifies that it is lyrics or maybe they just didn't care since there seemed to be a wonderful opportunity to jump on their soapbox and preach.

As for the rest, are ya'll gonna hate me because I carry a gun? If you do, to bad, its my gun. I have guns all in my house and taught my son to shoot one when he was 3, he's a pretty good shot for a 4 yr old now. Before you jump me, note that my father, brother and I all shoot professional trap and skeet so he has grown up around it.

Have a nice night.

The assumption here is that I give a flying rats ass about your "respect." I don't care if I deserve it or not. In fact, after reading your little diatribe on whether or not you "respect" me I prefer to keep your creepy brand of "respect" off of my person. The question is, how does one earn your respect? From what I gather it's subjective based on one's ability to behave in a way that you think people should behave. My respect is earned by conducting oneself with honesty and personal integrity. I did respect you, until your ridiculous little "the ball is in your court. If you can behave in a way that makes me happy, I'll respect you" ultimatum. You, by the way, failed to conduct yourself with honesty, so what makes you deserving of respect?

There are a myriad of ways to take the lyrics to that song and you know it. I took them badly and as I reacted to your insinuation like I always do and always will. My interpretation of them is based on my experience with people who start off by saying "Gun control" and then adding a nice long statement about a person whose corrupted using a gun to hurt other people. And that's what that song is all about. The assumption, and it's a natural one, is that you believe gun control is necessary. People who possess guns are corrupted and use them to hurt other people. For all your blather about knowing "gun nuts" you just convinced me even more that you're a fanatic wanting to tell me I can't own something because another person might use a similar object to hurt someone.

I'm not the one desperately needing a spin doctor. I was honest in my opinion, whether you liked it or not. You were not honest in yours. You approached it with the ambiguity of a lie. If a certain other regular had posted to this thread you would be singing a different tune about gun control. In fact, you would have deleted that ridiculous lyric because it would have hurt that person. Todd-o's little experience with guns is nothing compared to this other regular's. You would be singing the praises of gun control. I can tell because I went on a bender and you're talking about how you have "gun nuts" for friends.

I am who I am. I behave exactly how I behave. I follow my code of ethics. I don't lie to people. You always know where you stand with me. You never have to guess if I think you're an asshole or if I think you're fabulous. You know because I tell you what I think. You don't have to like it. You don't have to respect my opinion. However, after that nasty Cath! affair not so long ago, you should understand why honesty in interpersonal communication is rare and welcome.

The ball was never hit back to me to begin with. Perhaps you should pay more attention to your own words. You reserve the right to say what you like. I reserve the right to take it any way I want to. I took it, and I still take it, as completely offensive.

Have a nice day. :)

Georgia, I do not understand black humor. I see nothing in the lyrics that shouldn't be taken at face value. I see no depth of meaning in those lyrics.

Perhaps you should explain this "black humor" to me that I can't see.

Oh, this oughta be a good one, the psuedo-philosopher and little miss missed her meds have found a spot to disagree upon.

Black Bird, don't worry, she'll apologize to you in a week or an hour.

Muffin, don't worry either, he'll say something along the lines of "Peace be with you Starchild" all will be alright.

And before anyone has the chance to say it, I'll say it myself, "Marxist, shut the fuck up!"

Black humor

in literature, drama, music, and film is grotesque or morbid humor used to express the absurdity, insensitivity, paradox, and cruelty of the modern world. Ordinary characters or situations are usually exaggerated far beyond the limits of normal satire or irony. Black humor uses devices often associated with tragedy and is sometimes equated with tragic farce.

This is a simple explanation of what black humor is.

What appeals to some does not appeal to all. BB didn't write the lyrics but he noted the black humor in them and shared it with others. There is no harm in sharing, if others do not find the same humor they can skip past the thread or reply and express their own point of view. At some point in time though you begin to beat a dead horse. They are lyrics - that is clearly stated.

*shrugs* Okay, that's your problem now.

I don't respect those who fly off the handle into some self-righteous diatribe every time they are the least bit offended. I think it's childish. Your truthfulness *is* a strong point, I don't deny this, but it is undermined by your quickness to anger. This is just my personal observation about you; I know you don't give a damn, but if you're going to shout to the sky what you think about me, I'd might as well add my voice in defense.

You didn't seem to have any respect for me when you were calling sanctimonious and hypocritical, and telling me "Fuck You." Kind of late to tell me now that I still had a bit of it left, eh? If my respect means nothing to you and you have none from me, then arguing with you is a waste of my time... in which case I tip my hat and say "Good day to you and your, and Good bye."

That's what you believe the song is all about, what about the other individuals who responded to this thread? It seems like they *all* have different points of view on what the song means. What do I see? I see Trent Reznor (the writer) wrestling with his own inner demons, exposing them, and then exposing himself as being a thinker of these thoughts in his own shame.

Then again, what the hell do I know? I don't know nothing about sarcasm and irony in art... it's only the subject of all most my poetry and all my favorite literature.

I'm not the one desperately needing a spin-doctor.

I would have deleted it out of respect, if he or she asked. And as for desperately needing a spin doctor? I don't need one. I started the thread with the intention of sharing a little black humor. If my intention was to discuss gun control, I would have asked a question at the end of my post. Instead, I entered a disclaimer concerning black humor. Hmm, why would I do that if my intention was to voice my opinion on Gun Control?

Todd-o's little experience with guns is nothing compared to this other regular's.

No act of violence is "nothing", not even compared to something as large as the terrorist attacks. It all hurts the same.

Indeed it is... but personal attacks before you take a moment and ask, or think, will only leave you with a mess to clean up later.

The ball was never hit back to me to begin with. Perhaps you should pay more attention to your own words. You reserve the right to say what you like. I reserve the right to take it any way I want to. I took it, and I still take it, as completely offensive.

That's too bad, but that's your choice. I pay enough attention to my words; ask anyone how self-conscious I am. I don't like being misconstrued or misunderstood. I'll say it one last time: I didn't write this thread to offend you or anybody else and if I intended to write a thread on gun control, I would have made it a discussion. That is where I stand.

Dear Black Bird,

She'll sing mea culpae in a few hours (or weeks), no need to waste your psuedo-philosophical hot air on someone who won't read it or much less care.

Isn't there a Kung Fu episode on somewhere?
