The Coast Guard in New Orleans says it's investigating a fire on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Associated Press.

KHOU-TV reports that two people are dead and two more people are missing after an explosion at a platform in the Gulf.

Four people have also been airlifted to a hospital and said to be "in critical condition," according to WWLTV.

"Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said the rig in question is a shallow water platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It is near West Cote Blanche Bay, south of New Iberia on the south-central Louisiana coast," WWLTV reported.

Associated Press reports that the oil rig explosion happened off the coast of Louisiana and that four others were flown to area hospitals.

No one cares when an oil field worker is killed, unless it affects the price of gasoline.

It's just another cost of doing business.

Where I live, many of my friends and neighbors are oil field workers. I'd guess that's the same for you down in LA.

Let's find out the cause of the fire before we just chalk it up to corporate greed.

I'm not chalking it up to anything other than a dangerous job in a dangerous place.

Injury and death from fire is very common in Gulf oil fields and probably all oil fields. The families will get a settlement and life will go on. The only reason this is newsworthy is because of the recent attention to BP.

Working conditions on Gulf oil rigs and the inherent risks will not change. As I said before, unless it affects the price of gasoline, no one outside the families will care.

When someone dies working in the Alaska oil patch, it's newsworthy, to us who live here. To us, it's a big deal. But I agree that the average Joe in Ohio or where-ever cares more about a penny a gallon than a few deaths here and there to get the gasoline made for his daily-driver.

Four people died in Benghazi in order to insure a free flow of oil to world markets. Tell me you have reduced your fuel consumption in the past year and I'll believe you give a fuck about America Diplomats or oil field workers.

Bullshit.

It's an inherently dangerous business. Safety is Rule #1 but concentrated hydrocarbons will always be hazardous. Nothing in this world is accident or mistake-proof; the last time I checked humans were fallible.

Did I say they weren't? I said no one cares unless it effects the price of gasoline.

You are free to protest that you do in fact, care.

Four people died in Benghazi because The Fraud's regime didn't provide them with security they repeatedly asked for.

So you could have low prices at the pump. Don't act like you don't appreciate the effort.

They were cutting something with a torch without checking to see if it was purged. Why would you do that on a giant machine dedicated to moving huge amounts of flammable hydrocarbons around?

" The Coast Guard said that a Black Elk Energy Co. oil and natural gas platform caught fire after workers using a torch cut a line that had 28 gallons of oil in it, causing an explosion.

Black Elk's CEO, John Hoffman, said that the wrong tool was used in cutting the line. Contract workers should have used a saw instead of a torch, which caught vapors and caused the blast. The workers were employees of Grand Isle Shipyard, not Black Elk, he said. All of the individuals were men. "

Dumbasses!

How much you want to bet the investigation blames the two dead men?
