I'm interested in learning to play guitar and am looking for a little direction/guidance.

How do you decide on a first instrument?

How do you determine what method to use to learn to play?

Individual lessons or teach yourself?

I can play the piano, so I can read music...is it going to be a huge leap?

How much can I expect to pay for a guitar worth having?

How do you decide on a first instrument? Buy something small, a thin neck. It's much easier to finger chords.

How do you determine what method to use to learn to play? I would recommend lessons. If you're just starting out. don't get caught up in method. Just have someone teach you the basics, the sooner you can actually start playing, the more enjoyable it will be.

Individual lessons or teach yourself? See above.

I can play the piano, so I can read music...is it going to be a huge leap? I wouldn't even bother trying to read until you've learned basic chords.

How much can I expect to pay for a guitar for having? A decent new guitar can be had for $200-$300 hundred dollars.

If you want more specifics, feel free to ask.

checkout www.guitar.com for chord help and more

good luck!

Also, checkout Tacoma and Cort guitars. They are pretty nice guitars at very reasonable prices. I have tried both brands and they compare in quality to guitars three times their price.

I'm assuming you are looking for acoustic?

Guild makes some pretty nice accoustics, easy to play and good quality sound. It would likely be a little more expensive depending on the model, but I definately like them.

I agree on the Tacoma. The make isn't as important as the sound and playability. Make sure you take someone with you who plays so they can test it or have whoever is helping you play them for you. Stand back and listen to the guitars. Listen to alot of them. See what you like. The action is really, really important with an acoustic but this can be set up after you buy it. If you want to play classical then go ahead and get gut strings, otherwise, get a steel string as it will be more versatile. The classical has a wider neck and is harder to get your hand around, especially being a woman.

Through the Community Schools program you can get group lessons to begin with and then the instructor will help you find a private teacher for the kind of music you want to play. Take lessons in person. The instructor can help you with form and how to place your hands to avoid injury and you will be able to progress much quicker.

You have to have short fingernails to play the guitar. Your fingers will only be able to take so much to begin with until you develop callus. I remember playing until my fingers blistered and bled. Not a good way to start.

Reading music does not necessarily translate into guitar playing. The theory does: how to build a chord, chord progressions, transposing into different keys. If you can hear the changes you are already ahead.

Pick out one and play or strum it. If it sounds good to you,(after trying several) then that is probably the one to have.

I learned form friends, and by myself. My son jammed and learned by himself too. You can get tablatures from the internet of fingerings that will have you playing a song in a short while. A few good books on chords and fingerings at the music store are a good investment too.

Individual lessons or teach yourself?

See above. Lessons can help, but finding someone to jam with can be even better.

YES

Depsends on if you are getting electric or acoustic. on whether you are getting new or used. and where you go to purcahse it. Shop around, check out ebay and other net auction sites more for a guideline on price. Take you time, most importantly, so yo are happy with your purchase. It will be with yo for a long time and you will enjoy it. Have fun and play to your hearts content.:rose:

On-line guitar archives...lot's of tab and chord sheet music, helpful aides for beginners, including chord patterns.

Angus Young taught himself to play with rubber bands on a cigar box...your imagination and dedication are the limits.

Its been said before, only you can decide which guitar is best, pick it up, strum and see if it fits, so to speak. remeber to place finger all over the fret board. high notes tend to disclose whether or not, there is a need for tweaking on the actual body. You'll know it if it happens...sound like someone just killed a cat.

Lessons first, learn the basics. Forget anything about reading music. basic chord progressions and you're good to go.
After that play it by ear. In my experience being able to hear and play by ear has helped way more than being able to actually read chords (Which I couldnt for the longest of time)

Individual lessons or teach yourself?
Both. And be fore warned it takes a hellof a determination NOT to throw the guitar out the window more than once. believe me, every single guitar player has been through that stage in the beginning.

Depends on how you'r hands are fitted to your wrists LOL. I am not kidding, you are basically switching hands. Meaning on piano, your left hand defines one thing, and the right another. basically you switch around when going to a guitar.
BUT its ot that hard. Just takes a few weeks of getting used to.

How much can I expect to pay for a guitar worth having?
I wouldnt spend anything below 200 dollars on a decent guitar.

Anything else I can help with, feel free to holler.

I also taught myself how to play. If you show me a piece of sheet music I'll look like a monkey trying to figure it out!

Other good guitar sites are

www.tasbter.com
www.ultimate-guitar.com

There's also a great program called Guitar Pro, which will play the tune and who you what to play at what time...it's especially useful for learning solos. The best link for this is www.mysongbook.com From there you can find links to download the program, and it's got loads of tabs for the program too.

Good luck!

Been there more times than I care to admit, lol. :D And I play bass. :D

Oh one thing I'd like to point out....

Forget about trying to perfect solos and lead pickng at least the first 6 months. leanr the strumming technique and the chord progressions and move your fingers acordingly to that first, then pick up the solo and lead stuff.

In the end you'll thank me for it ;)

It really is a decision based on individual taste. Go to your local music store and play in the guitar section. Find one that "sounds right" to you. Each instrument has a different tone and the texture of the sound will be different. Find one that likes you. From a technical standpoint, the smaller neck is a good idea, simply because the reach on some of the acoustic guitars may be too hard on your wrist. I am not a fan of steel strings to practise with, because they chew up my hands. Don't get so carried away that you make your fingers bleed.

basic chord structure first. everything else second

Individual lessons or teach yourself?
I recommend lessons if you can afford them. If you can't and you have the self discipline then the others have already listed the web sites.

I can play the piano, so I can read music...is it going to be a huge leap?
Yes and no. In the beginning your knowledge of the piano, with the exception of being able to play by ear, will not help you...in fact might hinder you. Ignore your piano skills for the moment.

I would agree with nothing under 200. Don't just get a guitar because its pretty either...listen to it, see if it fits well in your hand and in your lap. Since you play piano, you already have the discipline to learn the instrument. Good luck.
