Oh Pullman's Compass series was amazing!!!! Best kid lit I've ever seen. I loved it The funny thing was, in the states it was marketed as Kid lit, but I wasn't feeling it. The main characters were young, but the subject matter was oh so contemporary.

Technically, it is children's/YA fiction - but there's a big trend for adults to read in these genres these days (and no reason why not). I blame Harry Potter, but then many adults read C.S. Lewis.

Actually, I still blame Harry Potter, just because I can :D

Good point on Lewis.. Though I find YA traveling a bit.. Ever read Bull's "War for the Oaks"? certainly not YA, based on the sexual content.. but still currently classed as YA by Amazon.

Good thread!

I actually misread the title and thought the emphasis was on 'pleasure' so right away Anne Rice writing as AN Roquelaure sprang to mind!;)

I suppose I would also pick the autobiographical books of Elizabeth Wurtzel ... I find guilty pleasure in her self-absorption.

LOL, I enjoyed the Beauty novels

SparkNotes to War and Peace

Also, wouldn't call these literature but the gaming manuals for WoW and occasional manga, New York Magazine, Art Forum, Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose (all mags).

Katzen, you sexy Night Elf geek you! When can we roll around semi naked enough in an inn?

Oh come on..

surely somebody has some guilty literaty pleasure...

My guilty literary pleasure is the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Mysteries that are wickedly funny!

Somebody mentioned Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials....brilliant trilogy, absolutely loved it. Just don't waste time on the abysmal movie that was made from The Golden Compass.

Another great fantasy series marketed to Ya but great for adults is Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke. They look deceptively childish and fairytale like but are dark in nature about love, death and oppressive, fascist government rule. Again, don't waste time with the lame movie made from Inkheart.

Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy...an erotic take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty.

The Bourne series. Whenever I need a break from reading something serious or challenging I pick up something with Jason Bourne and just enjoy the ride.

Oh god, don't get me started on Magazines.. my true weakness.. let's see.. Outside, Dirt Rag, Heavy Metal, Wired, Macworld, Newsweek, Time, Esquire, Men's Health, Penthouse Variations.. and several others..

Laurell K Hamilton - both her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series and the Meredith Gentry series. Yummo!

toilet time

The backs of shampoo bottles, but only when I am on the toilet without anything else to read. Sad panda.

Guilty Pleasures

Dresden Files are definitely a guilty pleasure.

Check out the Repairman Jack series from F. Paul Wilson.

Graphic novels bring back memories from reading comic books when I was younger, so Watchmen and some others are definitely guilty pleasures.

I mostly read biographies and histories, but occasionally I will just pick up some lighter fare.

Yeah, I should have added the Repair Man Jack books, I've read them all.

A guilty pleasure is reading the Sunday NY Times in one sitting. It's quite impossible and almost verboten around here to do such a thing. LOL

My guilty reading pleasurse are web serials (tales of MU, An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom, dark matters) and old school science fiction (yay asimov!).
