IC:
Vaan wasn't always a high-ranking Guardian of Starlight Temple -- he used to be the punching bag of his drunk father. His mother died in child birth, and as a result, Vaan's father blamed him, and often beat on him when drunk or high on cocaine. School was no release for him, for he was tormented by bullies there as well. One day when he was just eight, he was chased home by four bullies. He banged on the door for his father to let him in, but the drunken man called him a pussy and told him to stand up to the bullies. Vaan started crying, so his father let them all in and the five of them began punching and kicking Vaan, to the point where he thought he might die. His inner power kicked in, and in a scream of anger and pain and frustration, he unleashed a massive blast of energy that killed all five of them and destroyed part of the house.
A Guardian in the city (Pinellas Park, Tampa Bay Area, Florida) felt his power, and rushed to the scene to find Vaan huddled in a corner sobbing uncontrollably. The Guardian (Golden Eagle) took care of the boy, and arranged for him to be trained to use his power. Vaan was taken to a place called Cloud Island, where there was a forest-like city with huge clearings and many flowers called the Garden of Luna. In the center lied Starlight Temple, a huge building made of white marble and engraved with pentagrams and other Irish-Celtic-Gaelic symbols.
For three years, Vaan lived in the Garden and learned the ways of the Guardians, including the history of the Temple, the Code of Honor, and the basics of harnessing his inner energy. At age eleven, he was sent back to Florida to train as Eagle's apprentice. Eagle taught him more advanced battle techniques, as well as mixed martial arts and healing methods. When he was thirteen, his energy had grown enough so that he could levitate for extended periods. Over many months, this turned from levitation into flight. Along with that, he learned how to extend energy to move things rather than just blow them up -- telekinesis.
At age seventeen, Vaan had achieved what most did at twenty-one -- he passed the Trials. He became Eagle's partner instead of apprentice, and earned his Guardian name -- Silver Dragon. They fought crime and injustice together for about two years, but due to Vaan being too cocky, he neglected to prevent a criminal from attaining a gun, which he used to fatally wound Eagle in the heart. He died before Vaan could heal him, and as a result, he lost his fun, carefree side, and became cold and distant, but never rude or disrespectful.
For over four years, Vaan worked alone, but little did he know that he would soon be paired with a young woman who was his exact opposite. The day started off like most others -- plain and boring. He woke up, shaved, showered, and dressed in his black and silver clothing, ate breakfast, and prepared to leave -- his house was owned buy Starlight Temple, and had been Eagle's home before. It had two bedrooms, like all Guardian houses -- a room for each partner. Usually, there were two Guardians to an area, and in their case, they watched over both sides of Tampa Bay.
After donning his black trench coat and shades, and putting his hair in a tail, Vaan walked outside, focused his energy to emanate out through his skin, and pushed off the ground, rising into the air above the city. He stopped a few burglaries before swinging by Bob Evan's for some biscuits and gravy. After breakfast, he returned to his air patrol, but only a few hours into it (11 am), he received a phone call from headquarters.
"Silver Dragon," he said plainly as he held up his Video PDA. A Parliament member looked back at him through the small viewscreen.
"Dragon, we need you to report to the Temple," announced the lady. "We will... inform you of the situation upon your arrival."
"Understood. Dragon, out." He sighed after hanging up. Not informing him right away most likely meant they were going to ask him to go on some high-profile mission that was extremely dangerous and had a high probability of failure -- he was one of the best, after all. Unbeknownst to him, however, the Parliament didn't want to tell him he was being given a partner before hand, else he might not show up. Any partner was bad news as far as Vaan was concerned, let alone a young, free-spirited female.
After rounding the area one last time, Vaan raised high into the sky, powered up, and shot off like a bullet towards the center of the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in a loud POP. After about forty minutes, the island came into view. He landed down, took a moment to catch his breath, then proceeded to the Temple.
"Okay, Dragon, they'll see you now," the receptionist informed him as he sat in the waiting area. He nodded, and proceeded to the Parliament Chamber. Past the double doors, there was a high judge's bench shaped like a crescent moon, with the ends running along the north end of the circle chamber, opposite the double doors. On either end, there were steps, which led up to where the Elders sat -- there were twelve of them. In the center of the floor, there was a huge pentagram painted, and this is where people stood before the Parliament.
"Silver Dragon. Welcome back, son," spoke a man with a long white beard -- he was White Falcon, the oldest and most senior of the Elders. All of the Elders wore ivory robes with the Starlight Crest on their chest, except for Falcon, who as the Head of the Parliament, wore white robes under a long sleeveless robe with blue runes sewn into the hem. His Crest was worn on a necklace.
"I am pleased to stand before you again, oh great Elders of the Parliament. How can I be of service today?" asked Vaan.
"Well, there is no life-threatening mission as usual, I'm afraid," said Falcon with a smile. "We wanted to inform you in person that you have been assigned a partner."
Vaan's eyes grew wide. He struggled to keep his voice calm. "With all due respect, Sir, I am perfectly capable of maintaining my zone on my own. Surely I have proven that by now? Remember when--"
"You need not remind us of your past achievements, Dragon," interrupted Falcon. "We are well aware of your capabilities. Still, our decision stands."
"But, Sir, you know better than most that I work much more efficiently on my own. If need be, I will take the Trials again and prove that I do not need a partner. I will --"
"That will be quite enough, Dragon," said Falcon in a voice so stern it silenced even Vaan. "Our decision is final. You will be matched with your partner for a six week probationary period. Should you fail to get along with her, you will be assigned a new partner. This cycle will repeat itself until we find you someone suitable."
"Her? A woman, Sir?" Vaan's rage became even harder to control. Not only where they trying to give him someone to get in his way, it was a woman!
"Yes. Is that a problem?" asked Falcon, raising his eyebrows and giving off the impression that saying yes would be a very bad idea.
"No. Not at all, Sir." He kept a straight face.
"Good," Falcon said, suddenly smiling. "Guards, please escort her to the Chamber." They nodded and went to retrieve her from another waiting room. When she entered the room, Vaan nearly tripped and fell while standing perfectly still -- she was unbelievably beautiful.
Oh great, he thought to himself, "they just HAD to partner me with a hot young thing like her. I hope she's not a physical person. I hate touchy-feely people...
