Write stories, submit stories, repeat.
Don't agonise over your first story, the tenth one will be much better, because you need to write the other eight first.
One Lit page is about 3750 words, give or take.
A Red H is an average score of 4.5 from ten plus scores.
Write what you want to write, don't try to guess what readers want (you'll be 100% right and 100% wrong, depending on the reader).
A typical score rate is one per hundred views, one comment per thousand (unless your writing is very good or very bad, in which case you'll be told).
There's no such thing as a dumb question so ask it anyway.
All categories are different, some more different than others.
Join in, you'll soon get an idea of the waters (most people are okay, some aren't, but it's best to find that out for yourself).
The under-eighteen rule is absolute, you can say a character lost their virginity at sixteen but you cannot describe it.
No politics on AH.

Others will add more.

The main thing, though, if you want to write, is to start writing.

Welcome Polly from Dublin! Advice? Hmm.

  • Write what you like, because there's a good chance someone else will like it too.
  • Don't feed the trolls. Eventually you'll get a nasty comment from someone who just wants to get a reaction. Ignore them and they will probably go away.
  • Story contests and anthology events are a good way to get extra exposure and readers.
  • And most of all, have fun. Because otherwise, why bother?

Hello, Polly, and Welcome.

A few pieces of advice:

First, take all advice with a grain of salt! Including mine. Make of this site whatever you want.

Second, regularly read the Author's Hangout threads. You'll learn a lot.

Third, read the blue highlighted "sticky" threads you see at the top of the Author's Hangout forum. You'll learn a lot about how things are done, and what the rules and guidelines are.

Fourth, if you are writing stories and are puzzled about which category to publish them in, read this: https://literotica.com/s/love-your-readers-categories. It's the bible on the subject.

Fifth, feel free to ask questions. They say there are no stupid questions. That's not actually true. But sometimes it's better to bite the bullet and ask a stupid question than not to ask and do something even stupider later.

Most of the advice I'd give has already been said, so I'll just say - Hi and welcome!

Welcome Polly.

I just want to say, I love Dublin. Only managed to get there once, but the city was beautiful and the people were amazingly friendly, especially after 9pm in the pubs ;)

Best way to fit in is to read some stories to get a feel for what has been published and then to write some. If you are concerned about the story, go to the Editor's Forum and get an editor to help out.

But most of all, have fun.

James

Welcome to the madhouse. If you are not mad when you get here, you'll never leave. ;)

You have to treat this place like a farm. Always go barefoot. Feet are easier to clean than shoes.

Yes, I know I'm being silly but all the good stuff has already been covered. Even have fun, which is what I'm doing.

Come by the coffee shop. The first cup is on the house. The ladder is around back. :D

Welcome. When your first story is published, please share it with us.

Speaking as someone who did just that...but I’ve recovered now, Melissa. Lol.

In all seriousness the advice I received on my first story, both nice and nasty, was useful and I did take heed of it as I have of advice I’ve received since, privately. I don’t know if any of those that gave me that initial advice have read anything I’ve done since, but I’d love to get their opinion on the work I’ve submitted since that time.

I would take notice of all the advice you’ve been given even if you disagree with it. The person who can’t hear is deaf. The person who won’t listen is stupid.

Welcome and beware, Polly. When the going gets weird, the weird post here.

I found LIT a few years ago, and joined and started submitting only a couple of months later because I read vivid tales with bad construction and thought, "I can write better than that!" So I wrote a journal series -- that was rejected. Best thing that ever happened to me here. I learned what to watch for and have had little rejected since then.

I also worried the numbers of my first scores of stories. Another lesson: obsessing over view and vote counts does not improve my writing or mood. Write it, post it, watch it sail off into the sunset, then write and post another. Stay calm. No sweat. We are not paid here so just enjoy the ride.

Polly from Dublin! Welcome. Tell us a little more about your self. Love giving head and being tittiefucked is a nice start.

Being an asshat is not a good way to start in the AH.

I think BigSpurt just proved that one conclusively and without a doubt.

I'm hurt. I must have missed that greeting when I apparated into the Authors Hangout. I am saddened, she says, saddened (checks that taser is charged and pepper spray is ready because nothing makes a tittyfuck more exciting than a little spice and some electricity between us :D)
