Greetings from California.

http://michaelmay.us/08blog/11/1105_underwatercity.jpg

You may have heard that we're going to be getting a total of four, continuous rain storms and, in fact, are in the midst of one right now. This might have you a little concerned for us, but I'm writing to let you all know that we're doing fine. Everything is hunky-dory! Or will be as soon as we give everyone gills.

I suggest you folks learn how to stock pile some of it to save up for the wild fires that will come afterward.

The Mamas and Papas were right. It never rains in California, it pours.

Be safe!

Now you understand why nearly every river in the state has multiple dams on it. It isn't just for electricity or flood control but to hold onto water for the dry rest of the year. Because all levels of rainfall in California are 'normal', only the average means much. I doubt that you'd find one year in a hundred where the average equalled the real. Because of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation, our rainfall swings wildly. Some years we get half washed out to sea and in others we parch. This year started out the latter and is now running heavily toward the former. Another week like this one in February and another in early March and pretty much all our reservoirs will be full again and we can breathe a sigh of relief. Keep yer claws crossed!

There is more water in the air than air right now. I'm hunting out my scuba gear as we speak!

It's RAINING!!! And lots of it, which means snow up higher. :D
If I get cold, I'll swap suits and come for a dive off of...ummm...the closest bridge I guess.

Always wanted to scuba dive as well. Just not with sharks.
I could always just snorkel, close to the surface.
hmm

If you're not out dancing, stay dry and safe.

Mudslides are next......

The next summer.......wildfires, then rain and mudslides.....

It's all part of Southern California's circle of life:D

This is the only part of the U.S. where we have five seasons: wet, dry, fire, flood and quake. All in a day's work in La-la Land.

*Sniff* Now you've got me all choked up and nostalgic. Ah, the changing of the seasons.

I remember years ago when the mudslides isolated Big Sur for months. At least now they'll have the internet.

This is my fave Big Sur website: http://www.heartbeatbigsur.com/pages/giclee/goddess1.html

For rain, I prefer the Tucson variety - the women are dressed for one-hundred degree weather, but now they're soaking wet. Yowsa! (As Jerry Seinfeld says: "Look, then look away. Look, then look away.")

And the men look on with a smile on their faces.

Incidentally, I have a modest stock of Umbrellas and some Wellington boots if anyone is desperate.

What size are the Wellies? I went without yesterday wearing the short rather than long raincoat (my bad!) and my pants ended up soaked from knee to ankle. And they remained wet pretty much all day. :( If I'd had on Wellies, I'd have stayed dry.

California Storms to Head East, Bringing Rain, Snow
By Charlotte Porter

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- A series of storms bearing down on Southern California will spread eastward this week, piling more snow across the Plains and as far as Pennsylvania and New Jersey, forecasters said.

The first of the California storms struck yesterday, forcing the evacuation of about 200 homes in areas denuded by forest fires last year. As much as 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain fell and one man was killed when a tree fell onto his house, the Associated Press reported.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Southern California, including southern Los Angeles, Long Beach and Anaheim, as the second round began today, with a third, and likely the worst, close on its heels. A flash flood watch was issued for Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

“This weeklong series of successive storms hasn’t been experienced since 1998,” Jim Rouiller, the senior energy meteorologist at Planalytics Inc., said in an e-mail.

Rouiller said he expected the storms to mean high winds, “exceptionally high surf, heavy flood-producing rains ranging from 4 to 12 inches, severe mudslides at burn areas and heavy mountain snow ranging from 6 to 15 feet across the Sierra.”

A cold front moving south from Canada today will collide with part of the California storms and produce snow in the mid- Atlantic region for late Thursday and Friday, State College, Pennsylvania-based AccuWeather Inc. said on its Web site...

Whoa! That is very tempting.

No need to thank us  We talked it over among ourselves and said, "Dudes! We have got to share this with, like, the whole country!" And the rest of us said, "Dudes, yeah, cause, like, it's our patriotic duty..."

Just our way of spreading the love.
