Hard to pick just one. My faves are:

Queen
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen with David Lee Roth & Sammy Hagar

BTW- I went to school with Sammy Hagar, he was a year ahead of me at Fontana High School which is in So. Calif. I didn't know him very well, but he sure stood out in a crowd. This was in the mid 60's, and he was different than most of the other guys at school. He dressed different, had longer hair and always seemed kind of weird.

It would have to be the Rolling Stones
37 years and still pumping them out..
Ok Mick may be on a walker frame and Keith has plastic hips...but hell....they are OAP's now....
But they are still knocking out the albums and touring...not many others can claim that fame....

My two cents

Knowing I'm going to get a serious beating over this I'll simply state my vote and all due respect to all other bands and the albulms of theirs that I lovingly play bald but for me, it's KISS.....

STAIRWAY TO GILLIGAN'S ISLAND

Led Zeppelin, the biggest-selling band of the 1970s, were known among music experts for stealing songs from old blues artists and then crediting themselves. Their first hit, "Whole Lotta Love." was virtually a note-for-note recreation of Willie Dixon's "I Need Love." And "How Much More" was a direct lift of Howling Wolf's "Killing Floor."

But when someone messed with one of their tunes, it was time for legal action. A San Francisco-based band called Roger and the Goosebumps recorded a hilarious parody of the group's "Stairway to Heaven," matching Zep's melody with the lyrics of the theme song to "Gilligan's Island." Led Zeppelin quickly had its lawyers block the song's release. "It was a real blow," said one of the Goosebumps later. "We were getting airplay all over the country--I think we had a hit on our hands."

Came into this late

Haven't read all the posts....

Aerosmith for sheer longevity...have become a bit too "poppy" lately but, hey it works...

Every Glam frontman wnated to be Steven or David Lee...

Every guitarist wanted to be Eddie...Jimmy Page was good but I doubt he influenced as many guitarists as Eddie VH did.

The roosters will come back when the guitarists get their egos back...stop playing to their amps and their shoes and start showing off again. They can be real pricks (George Lynch) but they put on a show...

COCK ROCK!

Until then I will watch VH1 exclusively...

Best Rock Band

God folks,

Set out on the Highway, Heavy metal thunder, lookin for adventure, in whatever comes our way.....Born to be Wild!

Gotta remind you about Steppinwolf.

But I have to tell you Led Zepplin is right there with a tie and I don't agree with you that the Beatles don't count as a "Rock" band. I suppose you're referring to the late 60's, early 70's beginnings of what today would be heavy metal.

been this way for me a long while

I've noticed just about all my folks listed here in one form or another. Since I replay albums and tapes to the point of threading through several copies....

KISS

honorable mentions:
(depends on exactly what qualifiers you're using on greatest and rock)
Triumph
Queen
Rush
AC/DC
Judas Priest
Sabbath and Zepplin are tied in my opinion
Journey
Aerosmith
Iron Maiden

Problem Child said:
Led Zeppelin.

Name a more charismatic front man. No, not Mick Jagger. Sorry.

James Hetfield

Name a more inventive guitar player.

Kurt Hammit

Name a more powerful drummer than Bonzo.

Lars!!!

Nobody else even comes close.

Metallica does :D

Here's my 2 cents worth

I'm drunk and I'm ranting!

Nirvana...somebody said Nirvana...

Meaning no disrespect to the poster but, Christ, some junkie guitar player goes an blows 'is fuckin head off and all of a sudden they are the greatest band of all time...give me a fuckin break!

I am sick of Nirvana!!! The way the press still carries on about them you'd think that they all pissed gold coins or something. All this posturing about "selling out to corporate america" and "being true to your artistic sensibillities" is a bunch of horseshit. Any musician or ex-musician will tell you there is a time when you have to decide if if you are going to "sell out" or try to beg more food stamps. I don't know about you, but the ramen noodles thing wears really thin after a while. These little pukes now days don't know jack about the Business of Music. It is a Business...and if you are in the Business and don't realise that, you are a fool.

All that aside, it really pisses me off when some little snot nose comes along and says bands like Led Zepplin or literally any band mentioned in this thread didn't really contribute musically because they were part of the big, overblown, corporate, big haired, tight pants, 70's, 80's, 90's ego trip, theatrical, pop radio, label masturbation fuckall. I mean, what the fuck? Obviously, you can draw lines and see where Zep was influenced by Blues. So were the Stones. There is a family tree of Rock and each bands influences can be clearly traced. To say that, oh lets use Creed for example,is the greatest band in the world, they invented their sound. Well, yeah, to some extent they did, but they owe a hell of a lot to those bands (oh Metallica comes to mind immediately) that came before them. To disavow "classic" rock is to basically piss on the foundation of today's music. Now that really is egotistical!

Okay I'm getting off my soapbox now. I voted for Zepplin (oh no shit :)) because without them, no vinyl records would have ever been burned in the state of Oklahoma. :)
Have you heard all that backwards masking on Stairway to Heaven??? Made a believer out of me :)
