Just spent some time on a car ride listening to the Eagles Greatest Hits. What a fabulous album that is. They get my vote, but there are so many great bands.

Anyone else got a favorite?

Purple, Zeplin, Iron Butterfly, Blodwyn Pig, ...

Cream?

You gotta lot of great bands listed, but I must vote CCR. I grew up listening to them over & over. :)

Classic

Jethro Tull's music was actually used for an album recorded by the London Symphony.

Don't get much more classical than that in Rock.

:D :rose:

I had to vote "other" because you didn't list Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Paige, strange as he is, is a musical genius. No Zeppelin song could ever be mistaken as that of another band - ever. They were way too unique.

My vote for second would have to go to Pink Floyd - another completely original band.

I dunno what qualifies as a "classic rock band". But Queen, sweeps the field with all of the above. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purlpe are up there too.

Is Beatles a rock band?

Yes, Queen is a must as is Pink Floyd. No list would be complete without the Doors, either.

I think "Other" should have been left off as ten people could come up with ten different bands and skew the vote.

Chicago is not a rock band; never was.
The Beatles were not a rock band; they were a very good pop band, but certainly not rock.
Creedence was good, but a little too bayou for the greatest band ever.
The Eagles are also a good band, but their California sound is a little narrow for the greatest title.
Led Zeppelin should have been on the list, as Aerosmith should have been.
Also, The Doors, the Kinks, and the Yardbirds could have been on this list as well.

It is a close call between the Stones and The Who, but I give this vote to the Stones based on longevity, number of top ten hits and number ones, the fact that their greatest work is identifiably hard rythym and blues (for which I am decidedly biased,) and the fact that the members are all rock stars. In the Who, only Daltrey was a rock star, twirlling that microphone by the wire, long blonde hair, and bare chest. Sure Townsend jumped around and smashed his guitar, but Hendrix one-ups him with arson. Jagger reached icon status long ago, as did Keith Richards. Brian Jones, the member who died in the 1960s, was actually the most popular member of the band back then from what I hear. Charlie Watts and John Entwhistle are a push for the stoic act, and Keith Moon's death at a young age was upstaged by the numbers of Stones who died after leaving the band.

It is a close call, but I think the Stones get this one for the sheer volume of quality work - which more or less ended with Tattoo You but for Steel Wheels.

Rock on.

Just an aside, but has anyone seen that Miller beer commercial with the referee throwing the yellow flag at the concert?
"Illegal use of spandex; rock star status - denied."

Rock on! (shows ram's horns fingers)

I voted other, my pcik would be the Allman Brother's band.

The vote should be for second place. The Beatles have no peers. The lack of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd from the list of choices is surprising. I also have a very warm place in my heart for the Moody Blues.

But for my money, my 2nd favorite band is the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the most under-appreciated band of the 70's.

Got to be the 'Stones! No other band has been at or near the top for so long.

Stones. I'm totally with Vincent. It's true the Beatles have no peers but they weren't rockers at heart.

Hey people, there are a max of 10 slots on the poll, not 150. :D

Ok, missing Zepplin was a big oops on my part, as was the Doors and Queen and many, many others.

This just goes to show why one should not start a thread after a few Coronas. :D

I voted Beatles, and have to take issue with the "pop not rock" argument. Both McCartney and Lennon could wail a song with the best of them, and they had more impact on the development of the genre than anyone.

Stones win for longevity, and have maintained a high degree of quality for the entire run.

My "sleeper" pick would be The Band, for the sheer excellence of musicianship across diverse styles; and yet, they always sounded tight, and the quality of the different lead vocals they could showcase is unmatched in rock.

Floyd/Tull/Doors are my favorites and there's a lot in close second. The Beatles were good but too drugged out and not crazy enough. Doors, Tull, and Floyd really brought out the messed up lyrics.

I also wouldn't have minded seeing Warren Zevon up there but I guess many don't conider him "classic" rock.

This is close to sacrilidge considering how close to liverpool i actualy live -but I don't rate the Beatles. Nope, they do nothing for me. And i don't reckon they count as rock...nope.

Myself? I'd probably go with other (Sorry CD) and choose Queen.

i have to agree, no starting polls after coronas...however, had you been drinking sam adams or pete's wicked, that would have been a different situation. *grin*

Queen, David Bowie, really glam rock... if were ganna get so damn picky now.. love them and eldest child is obsessed so i have no choice but to listen.

eagles.. yeah.. love that... how about cheap trick? cool stuff

time to step off the way back machine and enter the present. but thanks for the ride!

You can argue over what's pop as opposed to rock, but the Beatles were so pervasive, they defy categories. Obviously, they weren't a pure "rock" band, not with songs like, Michelle, Hey, Jude, and Yesterday. But those were their change of pace numbers. The Beatles were simply, the Beatles.

For what it's worth, number two would be the Stones for their longevity and Satisfaction, with The Who a close third for Pete Townsend and the rock opera, Tommy.

Most innovative group not yet mentioned: Blood, Sweat, and Tears.

Most likely to nail your happy ass to the wall: Grand Funk RR. Their rendition of Locomotion has to be one of the ultimate power rock songs.

Rumple Foreskin

I would have put Warren Z on the list but I didn't think he was that popular. Personally, I thought he was a brilliant musician.
