About a week ago, the EEOC ruled that excluding contraceptives from health plans violates the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which requires equal treatment for pregnant women and makes it illegal to treat women differently simply because they might become pregnant. I don't have a link, but the article I read was in the Wall Street Journal.
"The agency's decision is a victory for women's groups, which have long argued that it was unfair for insurance companies to cover prescription drugs and services for men, like the impotence drug Viagra, while failing to cover contraceptives."
I ripped out the article and marched in to work yesterday to find out if our health insurance coverage would be changed in 2001 to cover bcp's. Much to my surprise, the plan was already changed and it WILL cover bcp's beginning January 1! Yeah! Now my complaint is that they didn't TELL anyone about the change in coverage.
So, if you're like me and previously included your bcp cost in your Section 125 election for pre-tax deductions from your paycheck at work, you may need to change your elections for 2001 IF your insurance will cover the cost of bcp's. If you are no longer paying the bill for the bcp's, you don't need pretax dollars set aside to cover them.
My public service announcement of the day. Hope it makes sense to most of you Americans.
