Is this phrase an analogy? A metaphor? something else?

"Killing for peace is like fucking for virginity."

Its been a long time since I was in an English class and I can't remember the difference.

I would say it's an aphorism and an analogy. Of course, fucking justice to preserve peace is just as pithy...

I had to look up aphorism - but that works well. Was that an anti peace jab? I didn't get what you were trying to say?

Personally, I don't think *anyone* is actually anti-peace. I'm just very contrarian, that's all. :) My own aphorism is the complement of yours, and I like to think that both of them are true. No one is against peace, and few people are against justice...

sorry - just getting a little gun shy (pun intended) every time I post something lately someone is hammering anti peace stuff back. But thanks for the reply - I'm having a disagreeement with an old friend on how to label that saying.

No worries and no apology needed... And 'aphorism' is the right word. 'Platitude' is another possibility, but only if you're being cynical and negative... I'm in sweetness-and-light mode, myself. :D

Well I could sure use some of that to rub off on me. I'm grouchy and tired myself. But I think I won the arguement. Think I'll call him and rub it in! lol

From my school days I learned (incorrectly, I think) that saying "As -- as a ---" (As blind as a bat) or that something is "like" something is an example of a simile, whereas saying "He glared daggers" (as oppsosed to "he glared at him as though he was throwing daggers") is a metaphor.

Your quote is also an illustration of oxymoron -- a contradiction in terms -- like "Volvo Driver" or "Literotica Author"...

In the 70's feminists used to have stickers saying "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle." I always liked that.

simile - now there's a term I'd nearly forgotten about! oxymoron - jumbo shrimp? Smart President? Good War? hehehe Thanks!

AFAIK anything with 'like' or 'as...as' in it is a simile. If you say it literally, then it's a metaphor.
