on topic-ish: Actually, the 'feeder' mice sent to pet stores, zoos, recovery facilities, etc. are gassed in a similar manner to using car emissions. i used to work for a lady that raised them. The mice/rats of a proper age are counted out (25 per package), put into a coffee can, then CO2 used on them for various amounts of time (10 seconds for the smallest, a full minute for adults). Then they're frozen until an order for them comes in.

One of my momma cats is the best mouser I've ever seen. In fact, a couple of weeks ago, she came home with a dead possum. Imagine it!!

She has three kittens right now that she will bring live food to in order to teach them to catch and kill them. I had to save a baby bunny one morning (it was just tooooo cute!)

I second the "find what's attracting them" approach. Do a really thorough sweep through on all possible foods sources, inside and out. I'd also add "find where they are getting in" (unless you've got no door or something). A good way to keep them out is to stuff any holes with steel wool before blocking them; even if they get past whatever is blocking the outside of the hole, they hate gnawing steel wool. Also, since he's in your rafters - get a big vat of Vaseline and slick the rafters. If he can't get easy access to his hiding places or rat trails, he may look for more welcoming lodgings.

That said, it may be the cold that's driving him in there as well, and that's harder than food to deal with as a motivator. If it's the cold, you'll need either to kill them or to make your garage incredibly unwelcoming. Possibly leave one or two dogs in there at a time most of the day?

Let your dogs loose on them. My mom's Akita is the best mouser aside from our chihuahu/terrier cross. Especially rats, big enough to hold thier attention.

He's too dignified for mice, but rats mean playtime out in the barn!

I get mice inside almost every fall, and after some horrible experiences with traps and cats (dead, tortured mice in my bed), I switched to D-con poison. It works, it's clean, and they go outside to die and don't stink behind the stove for a week. I don't know how much they suffer but I don't think it's much, because at a store I worked at where rats were a problem we'd sometimes see the poisoned ones still staggering out to steal crackers. At least the poison didn't seem to affect their appetite.

Honestly, I don't know how you could hold a trapped rat in a garbage bag under a car tailpipe while it's squealng and scrabbling to get out. If I had the stomach to do that, I might just strange it and get it over with. or club it over the head with that little lead pipe from a Clue game. (It was Dr. Mabeuse who did it, with the lead pipe, in the library!)

I did hit on a good live trap (for mice at least) by accident in my old apartment. I had a plastic kitchen garbage can, about three feet high, and had thrown some bread into it without a garbage bag. The mice could climb into it by using the wall, but they couldn't climb out, so when I discovered them in there I just took the can downstairs and emptied them out into the alley.

But those were cute little mice. If it were me and they were rats, I'd get the poison and fuck 'em.

We just moved and when we were cleaning out the shed from our old place we found this little tiny two inch long mouse with a 6 inch tail. He was scared stiff so we caught him in the dust pan and let him loose beyond our fence. It was so cute I couldn't kill it.
When a friend mowed my lawn last summer (while the hubby was deployed) he found a mouse and trapped it in some decorating stones. He was going to leave it there to starve to death, but I just couldn't do it so I let it out. I know, I am such a wimp.
