Got caught in a storm

My wife and I went for a ride this afternoon. Once again this was nothing special. We ride a lot.

When we left home the weather was sunny, warm and a bit breezy. The weather report was for clear skies. We headed south to hit a store we wanted to get a few things at.

Because it was warm I pulled on my denim jacket covered by a leather vest. My wife had her leather on. Both of us of course had on jeans and helmets.

The ride south was just fine and we made it to the store without problems. We did our shopping and grabbed what we needed. A couple of new batteries for my cordless drill as well as a Hole Saw Kit. Also some new blades for my Jig Saw. Nothing major and it all fit easily in the cargo box.

While we were in the store their radio was talking about a possible T-Storm forming up north of where we live. Again not a problem. It was to the north. We hopped on the bike and started riding home.

We were maybe half way home when Mama Nature decided we were having just way too much fun. She decided a lesson in humility was in order.

The sky grew dark rapidly then we started getting hit by hail. Not the hail I'm used to from up north. Oh no this was southern stye hail. We were getting pelted by chunks of Ice the size of quarters screaming out of the sky. I drop my helmet visor as I feel my wife tuck in close behind me. She's protected by my bosy as I start soaking up some damage from the ice through my denim and leather. I can hear the hail hitting my helmet. I'm glad I have the windshield on the bike, it's deflecting some of the hail. We keep going as there's no place to stop. The next place to take cover is home. (On this route there isn't even a bank with a drive through in which to take shelter.) The lightening is streaking the skies and the thunder is getting louder.

Then Mama pulls out the stops. The Hail relents only to be replaced by rain. The skies open up and I'm having trouble seeing more than ten feet in front of us. With the lightening flashing at least once per second it's like sitting inside a flashbulb. The sound of the rain on my helmet and the thunder is almost deafening. If my wife was complaining I couldn't hear it. I keep going even though I slow down a bit. I'm peering from under the visor and over the top edge of the windshield.

By the time we made it home we had rolled through flooded areas on the main roads, water standing high enough I was worried about it hitting the hot engine beneath me. We had on more than one occasion slalomed past a stalled car that appeared out of the rain in front of us. Slowly we made our way home through the downpour. I was sore from the hail and starting to get a headache from the rain pounding on my helmet. When we finally made it home and parked the bike we were both chilled and sore. We kept our helmets on as we ran to the door and let ourselves inside.

Standing in the kitchen we stripped down, dropping our clothes on the floor until we were butt naked. I stepped into the bathroom long enough to grab a couple of towels with which we dried off. We were both surprised to find we had power and my wife wasted not time in gathering up our clothes and tossing them in the dryer as I started a pot of coffee.

Dried off we pulled on dry clothes, grabbed some coffee and settled down to watch the storm as we slowly warmed up. Before long we had started chuckling then laughing about it. It had certainly turned into an interesting ride.

Oh, we found all of the cats hiding. Four of them, Magi, Scrapper, Squeek and Bubba were hiding under the bed in a pile while Smokey was hiding in her cabinet.

Here at the trailer we received four inches of rain in roughly an hour.
