Gregory Gandrud, a regional vice chairman for the party, warned members of a committee considering backing the repeal to be cautious
about the message the party is sending at a time when it's trying to broaden its membership.

To build the party "we have to be very careful how we portray ourselves publicly," he said, adding that there could be other ways
to deal with the issue. He urged members to consider "the message that comes out of this convention."

The three-day convention took place with a backdrop of the partial government shutdown in Washington, D.C., with party members
eager to place the political fault on Democrats. Texas Gov. Rick Perry told reporters at the convention Friday that President Obama
is to blame. "This is on him," Perry said.

Tea party activists made an energetic showing Saturday at a California Republican Party convention, promoting resolutions to block
the state's high-speed rail project and require voters to show photo identification at the polls as part of a push to influence the
direction of the struggling state organization.
