If that were even remotely true I would have to join Phrodeau's religion. On a good day Google is excellent for reinforcing confirmation bias and providing citations that agree with you. On a bad day Google is outright proselytizing and actively suppressing information.

First of all there are no media Outlets that large swaths of the population support but for the sake of discussion let's take all of those left-leaning site all together and let's assume that everyone on the left trust all of them all of the time that still doesn't account for why they are not a mere 50% as opposed to 96% of the top search results.

Which is exactly what Trump is pointing out.

Google's response completely moves the goal post saying that they don't rank things according to political bias. They may not do that but the net result of which organizations they choose to put more weight on has that actual effect.


This is not something that government needs to get involved with at all. The president of the United States should simply openly endorse DuckDuckGo, or some other search engine and watch Google's valuation drop by 50% overnight.

Google uses automated programs called "spiders" to search the internet and index pages based on keywords. While search results can vary between users, observers were quick to point out Tuesday that the top result for many "Trump news" searches was an article from Fox News.

According to Google, it uses algorithms to evaluate hundreds of factors including user experience and how many other prominent sites link to a page. It then ranks results by order of usefulness.

It also seeks to identify websites that manipulate its algorithms, and pushes their results down the rankings.

Trump appeared to be referencing a story published in recent days by conservative outlet PJ Media, which claimed that Google was "deprioritizing" content from conservative websites. The story was picked up by other conservative outlets including Breitbart.

Lou Dobbs, a Fox Business Network host and close friend of the president's, highlighted the report on his program on Wednesday.
