Anyone else use google docs to write? I know I need to break down and get Word, but Docs has been working pretty well and it goes with me everywhere.

I wrote my latest story in there but when I cut and paste it to submit it on here it is taking away the line breaks between paragraphs. Does anyone know an easy way to fix this?

I emailed it to some friends and the line breaks show in the email.

Help! Lol. Thanks.

save the doc file as a "txt only with page breaks" file and use that to copy to the Lit box.

I haven't had that problem, but it seems as TX has the fix for you. I've been a Word user for years and only been using Google Docs for a while. I have found that it plays nicer inside the Chrome browser than Internet Explorer, so you might want to make change if you haven't. Otherwise, I enjoy having easy access to my files.

The joy of google docs, (I used to use it with my students), is that two can be on it making, and seeing, changes simultaneously in real time. A real boon to writers and editors who truly seek to work together.

Personally, I have no desire for anything I write [for whatever purpose] to be left on some random bit of hardware in some building so any fool, governmental or not, can get at it for whatever reason.

This is the only advantage as far as I can see it.

I do all my writing on Google Docs. That way, I can access it from anywhere.

When I'm ready to submit to Lit, I copy all the text, and past it into Notepad. This strips off any and all formatting or control characters that Google saw fit to insert. Then I re-copy it from Notepad into the Lit submission box. Works every time.

I write exclusively in Google Docs primarily via smartphone. The biggest problem I've encountered is when it autocorrects without prompting. That's been the most irritating thing but I think its more of a smartphone issue than Google Docs. Desktop version doesn't have that problem.

All my work is in Google docs. The spell checker sucks, but I have learned to live with it. I haven't found a character limit yet.

I copy and paste into Notepad before posting, as suggested above. When I want to preserve fonts (italics), I [File][Download As] into a format that maintains the font.

I prefer Google's hard drives to my own. I have lost to much data to faulty hardware. It's not 'if' your drive will go bad - it's 'when.' Google uses redundant storage methods that can't be duplicated at home.

What random bit of hardware? What are you talking about? Why is it any different than being on Lit.'s servers? If you use the desktop version you can turn auto correct on or off. The only difficulty I see with Google Docs is the constant prompting to download Google's browser, Google Chrome

you can fix those page and line break problems by creating and assigning both page and paragraph default formats in Word and Open Office you can do this by selecting format, then Styles and formatting, create the paragraph and page formats yo want, save and name them, then apply the whenever necessary. I have separate ones for headings, quote indents, first line indents, title pages, copywrite pages, chapter headings, dedication pages, etc.

I was a loyal MS Word user from back in its DOS days. When this Office 365 nonsense started, I jumped ship. I'm using OpenOffice now, and I like it very much. Once in a while something doesn't quite work as expected, but there are times when I discover that their version of something is better and makes more sense.

I'm with Handley Page, Google Docs sounds like a great deal, but I've never trusted the cloud thing. It's probably irrational, but I use my Libre Office for a lot of stuff other than Lit, and I'm not prepared to put everything on google docs, and it's silly to use it only for Lit and my LO for everything else.

I tried Google Docs but went back to Microsoft Word. I started with Word when I began writing. Maybe when I have to update my 2007 to a newer version I'll find the program confusing or overwhelming, but for now, I'm comfortable with what I have.

I ended up getting MS Word. It's what I've always used to write and what I'm the most comfortable with. Thanks for all the suggestions. I do love Google Docs for editing. Don't think I want to jump back and forth though.

Personally, I don't recommend the use of any later version.
