I know this might not be the ideal forum for it but I thought I'd still just lament the passing of Willie Stargell, who was a truly great guy. Great ball player and great man. To paraphrase Kenesaw Mountain Landis, why would god choose to call a thoroughbred like Willie when there are so many others who could be taken instead.

"There comes a time in every Mans life when he really has to be a Man." Wilver Stargell

Sorry

Forgive that last one. Its late and I'm overly sentimental and I was a Pirates fan growing up.

not at all

The whole city is in mourning over the passing of Pops. His passing cast a pall over the opening of PNC Park, tho his statue will, as Willie himself said, be scaring little kids for decades to come. It's really nice.

It's about 480 feet to put a ball out of the new park into the river. It would take a titanic shot to do it. Cap'n Willie would have been the heavy favorite to pull it off had he played there in his time. Now he's one for the ages.

I'm glad I came in Here...

I'm a Big Red Machine fan...The Pirates were and are a great Advesary (sp?)...I will forever miss the Windmill...

Indeed. Rarely is an athlete so universally hailed as a great guy the way Willie was by anyone who could grab the microphone over the weekend. Its hard to have faith in a god that would call home Willie when guys like Pete Rose are still kicking around(Not that I wish death on Pete but still)

Pete deserves to be in Cooperstown...

With Bench, Perez, Concepcion,Griffey,Sparky

I think the problem with Rose and the Hall is that sometimes being an absolute scumbag of a person can keep you out, and I'm glad it has for Rose.

Perez??? He shouldn't be in if Hodges isn't.

Concepcion????? I'm not sure you're serious.

Griffey?? Sadly you don't get in the Hall because your sperm created a HOF quality ballplayer.

Sparky??? I've got no problem but he never won with overachievers. Billy Martin was 10 times the manager that Sparky was.

Big Red Machine

Indeed. I have no doubt that ten or fifeen years from now I'll be pushing for the induction of John Olerud, Ed Sprague and Devon White. Being a fan takes a lot out of you :)
