Good Titles

I had yet to give much thought to making them 'catchy.' They usually come from within a line from the story or just a phrase describing its theme. Only a few spaces are allowed in Lit's title window, which makes it challenging to come up with a good one, but as many here have shown, it is still possible.

Probably my catchiest title was 'Life Is Like Shit - Not Chocolate' The title is about divorce; a carpenter's shitty EX is trying to take him to the cleaners, but an elusive Asian ninja lady seeking justice in a major FBI criminal for someone else intervenes. The plot lines merge in a back-and-forth satire and humor category story. Readers seemed to like the story – it is well-rated.

Heh, I don't think my titles are clever particularly. They tend to be more obvious, to let the reader know what to expect.

That said.... I did do 750 words, which amused me (if no one else) because it's a 750 word story (no kidding) for the 2023 750 word story competition about an entry in a 750 word story competition. It didn't do very well, but I left it up because I still like it.

More recently, The Mirror Made Me Do It is perhaps a pretty fun title.

"The Floggings Will Continue..." - due to length limitations I had to let readers fill in "until morale improves" for themselves, but I'm still pretty happy with it. Both an accurate description of the action and a tip of the cap to the workplace banality that's the backdrop to the story.

Also quite happy with "Loss Function" as a double-meaning title even if it's a bit obscure.

Well as long as we're doing shameless self promotion, Fucky Friday as a spoof of Freaky Friday was a pretty clever title, I think. The sequel Sucky Saturday was a little clever, but not as much, and then the final installment Submissive Sunday isn't finished yet.
I have something to admit that's funny, but also a little embarrassing.

In the story Sucky Saturday, Anthony has a rough day... and I named it Sucky Saturday because his Saturday was crappy. As in it sucked. Also sucky and fucky rhyme, and Sucky Saturday and Fucky Friday are both alliterative.

It was only a few days ago, months after I actually wrote the story, that I even made the connection that:

suck = oral

The story features a blowjob, and I never even considered that when I named it sucky.

(And for the record, I use suck to mean oral ALL THE TIME... I just didn't think about it in that particular context)

Yes, I am an idiot. Thanks for asking 🫣

Err, umm... Yeah, um getting back to the points - sorry, point.

I try and give my stories interesting titles. Sometimes that even works. "From Norway, with lust" is one of my better attempts.

Good Titles

It has been pointed out to me by multiple people (or was it just @SimonDoom telling me multiple times?) that my titles suck, if the point of them is to attract readers. I’m way too fond of puns, and “clever” titles, and joke titles (often so recherché that only I get them) and even Latin titles. None of these are good for business.

Among my longer stories, about my only - say what it’s about - title is “Strapped-down & Strap-on”. Pretty clear what that’s is going to involve.

If it helps, I was about 95% of the way through writing "Riddle of the Copper Coin", with a protagonist named Penny, before it clicked for me that as well as being short for "Penelope" a "penny" is a copper-y coin.

I generally suck at titles, but I have a few good ones.

"Fear, Lust, and Vanity" - speaks of the characters' emotions and what each of the three femslashed leads embodies. Rachel McAdams, femslash virgin and prude- Fear. Keira Knightley, bold swinger- Lust. Scarlett Johansson, self-absorbed headcase- Vanity.

"Beijing Streakers" is a story about exactly what the title says. Seven athletes streaking in Beijing. Not the best idea.

"Desert Angel" applies to both the characters in the Romance plot, Eva Mendes and her rescuer.

"Passion of Erika Christensen" is a semi-obvious pun on a popular religious film title. The plot concerns a religious celebrity and her personal struggles with passionate activity.

"Passion 5" is subtitled "Free Katie". That's the quest of the plot, in reference to the female alternate lead, who is trapped in a bad relationship. The female main lead frees her by reminding her of her true self.

"Passion 2" is subtitled "Riding the Bull". This title refers to a frequent theme in my writing, manipulating bullshit. It also references the male lead (Benicio del Toro) and the challenge faced by the female lead in the story.

"Loose Ends" resolves the lingering issues from my "Passion" series and addresses the lead character's mood as she sits alone in a bar.

"Hunters & Prey" covers its themes and each lead character's role. The roles are of course reversed in the story when appropriate. A paparazzi stalks a celebrity hunting deer and... you can read it to learn what happens next.

"Two Cats in Heat"- 2 women named Cat femslashed. Again, title fits plot.

"Additional Aftermath" is a reference to scenes after credits in Marvel movies. This is the subtitle of my X-Men story, which concerns fan fiction after-credits scenes for "X-Men 3: The Last Stand".

There is a long, incredibly dark, and uncomfortably mean-spirited series that I do NOT recommend, by an otherwise very talented author. I only read the entirety because I know the author, and I wanted to finish it before I complained. It's a lesbian, MC foot fetish story and not in my wheelhouse in the slightest.

Just the same I was really far through "The Thrill of Defeat" before I realized that the title was a foot fetish pun. 🤣

An old-and looking back cringe worthy story grammar wise- was my first contest entry back in 2011

"Under The Mistle-Toe" A Christmas themed foot fetish story.

A more recent Halloween entry about a couple who hires a young female escort to play with "A Trick for Their Treat"
The girl's name was Candy(of course) and yes, there was an appropriate amount of unwrapping, sticky, sweet tasting etc...lines involved.
