I read of a suburban USA guy in the pre-stereo early 1950s who wanted good bass for his home hi-fidelity system. He sent his wife away for the weekend. Then he tore out a section of living-room wall and dug an adjacent hole yard-deep in the backyard. He filled the wall with a fibreglas 4x6 foot exponential speaker horn. The backyard hole received an empty 55-gallon oil drum topped with an 18-inch bass speaker that fitted into the base of the big speaker horn. Fill dirt around the drum; pat down some fresh turf. A thin fabric wallcovering to hide the speaker mouth and VOILA! 'Tis done!

What to play on that? The ominous subsonics in Also Sprach Zarasthustra, sure.
