Two words: "Plata Quemada". :)
I recently started searching for some gay-based movies and happened to find this one.. It's really incredible. I think it's based on a true story that happened in Argentina or something..
It is about two men, who are criminals and happen to be lovers. They organize a robbery and something goes wrong and they have to flee. The police is on their trail and they have to keep a low profile. Not really an action movie, mostly maintains the focus on the relationship and thoughts of the two lead-actors, Nene and Angel on screen, played by Lorenzo Sbaraglia and Eduardo Noriega respectively.
It's a really tender and sweet movie(to my surprise considering we are watching a film about criminals), the actors are amazing, they really portray the relationship perfectly, you can even sense the care and love they have for each other. If I had to rate it out of five I'd give 4,5. maybe even 5. :D

I'm thinking of seeing Big Eden right now, I heard it's nice, dunno what the story is about though. some family guy getting involved with another man I think..
Brokeback Mountain was fine. Some reaaaally good scenes, but otherwise I think it was just ok.

If you know any good ones do tell. :rose:

Good to know.

I sort of liked "Trick". It was somewhat sappy, but cute. (I've seen a fairly large number of mediocre to halfway-decent movies with gay relationships, but few really good ones)

I've seen Brokeback Mountain. For all the hype, I was fairly unimpressed. I mostly just liked the scenery (yay mountains).

As a crossdresser myself, "Victor / Victoria" was pretty decent. LOTS of gender-bending and same-sex relations in that movie, but it's all pretty PG from a scenery standpoint. Cute movie, good dialogue, and interesting subject matter, but not an ultimately plausible or great movie. Good for a one-watch, though.

Mambo Italiano - The play was terrific and the movie is moderately funny. The actors playing Angelo's parents are really good.
DeLovely - The music is Fantastic, the rest is unexciting.
Get Real - Pretty fluffy. A onetime watch.
Prom Queen, the Marc Hall story - Again, not super exciting. Sort of decent.
Unconditional Love - Quirky. I like it and it's got Rupert Everett. Pretty good.
The Lost Language of Cranes - Angsty and moody. Forgettable.

More to come as I remember them...

Get Real ( 1999) starring Brad Gorton and Ben Silverstone.

Ben Silverstone plays Steven Carter, a high school student who's also a writer. He attends a prestigious private school and sometimes has sexual encounters with older men in public places. His parents don't know he's gay and he hides it from everyone except his best friend Linda, the chubby girl next door.

Steven falls in love with John "Superman" Dixon ( Brad Gorton), who's the star athlete of the school and a very tall, handsome and masculine man. The problem is that although John Dixon likes Steven Carter, he's also bisexual and dating a supermodel named Christina Lindmann. Oh, and John's homophobic athletic buddies dont like Steven at all and bug him all the time.

The two young men fall in love and it's all wonderful, until they're caught.....

Madame Sata (2003)

The story of Jao Francisco Dos Santos a.k.a. Madame Sata. A good-looking black man living in Lapa, Brazil, leads two lives. By day, he's a pimp and street fighter who takes crap from nobody and even fights the corrupt police.

By night, he's a flamboyant tranvestite cabaret performer. In both lives, he has both male and female lovers. One of his female lovers is a prostitute, and his effeminate male lover is a totally funny character who makes WILL & GRACE's Jack look MACHO !!!

One of my friends reminded me of a good one the other day: Imagine Me and You

A woman is about to get married when she falls in love with another woman. There is a sex scene but I don't remember much about it.

Yeah Mambo Italiano was really good :D
Lots of fun and I liked the whole concept cause the Italians are pretty much the same with Greeks when it comes to family. I mean what you see in the movie isn't overexaggerated or something. It's reality :D

I remember sometime ago I saw a trailer at the cinema about a movie with two girls falling in love or something. But I had a car accident and I am a bit out of date on pretty much everything(3 months without being out in the sun yikes o_O). It may have been Imagine you and me. Don't know..
Thanks everyone for the movies ;) :rose:

Uuh has anyone seen 'Shortbus' and 'Hedwig and the angry inch'?(I think that's the name I'm not sure..)

And wow PredatorSmile Madame Sata sounds SO unique :D A street fighter that goes into trasvestite cabaret performing mode at night? I'm definately seeing that :)

hedwig is great

hedwig is funny and beautiful, the music is great too....."the origin of love" is a great ballad and the accompanying animated visuals rock....5 stars, two thumbs up....

I thought Brokeback Mountain was downright disappointing after all the hoola they made around it. Maybe it was recieved different in the US? The main thing I heard here was "Yeah, so what's the big deal anyway?"

I just saw "Tipping the velvet", a BBC miniseries and found it quite amusing.

I saw part of "Tipping the velvet", I thought it was pretty decent, but couldn't watch the whole thing because it came on TV when I was super-busy.

I think part of the thing about Brokeback Mountain was that the American cinema industry was petrified at the notion of showing a non-stereotypical gay relationship. Can you think of any movie made for a big budget for US audiences which portrays gay love and sex frankly and honestly. (I can't, although this movie certainly came much closer) I think that they chickened out a little bit in terms of not wanting to shock the audience. (And of course, the ending was a complete cheat.) My opinion, anyway.

Ooh!! I remember a good one!

Kissing Jessica Stein.

After several successive unsuccessful tries at relationships with men, Jessica Stein finally ponies up and does what she's been threatening to do for a long time - Switch sides.

It's a neat movie about sexual experimentation, love, relationships, and all that jazz. Good for a one-watch.

We picked it up at Target and weren't crazy about it, but that's just us.

I want to second Trick.

I also have a soft spot for "ButI'm a cheerleader"

I'm blanking on the name, but there's this great one where it's about a mormon missionary and this hot waiter.

How could I have forgotten that?! *slaps self on forehead* It is a good movie, one of the better ones I've seen. Plus it has some really good looking actresses.

From a straight ex-film student's perspective - Not necessarily overtly sexy films, not necessarily all classics (though most are/will be), but all easily findable (generally): Gay male - Bent, Gods and Monsters, In & Out, My Beautiful Laundrette, Philadelphia / Lesbian - All Over Me, Bound, Fucking Amal, Henry & June (partly based), Tipping the Velvet (as previously recommended, but I had to repeat it).

Oh man, I was going to say "what's somebody who saw this movie when they were 12 doing on the boards" and then I looked up when it was made (1999) and I did the math and now I feel old! I didn't find anything particularly erotic about this movie, I don't remember any sex scenes, but glad you liked it. I liked Clea DuVall in particular.

My thoughts on other movies mentioned so far -
Kissing Jessica Stein - didn't especially like it
But I'm a Cheerleader - really liked it, especially RuPaul
Tipping the Velvet - mixed feelings
Hedwig and the Angry Inch - love it, practically know it by heart
Brokeback Mountain - I'm with M's girl, found it disappointing
Bound - too overhyped! don't like it at all.
Fucking Amal - surprisingly cute, needs more publicity here
Victor/Victoria - excellent

Other GLBT movies I have seen -
Bar Girls - meh, didn't like it
Fire - extremely good but might be emotionally hard for some
Before Night Falls - loved it
The Laramie Project - disappointing
Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love - cute babydyke story with Laurel Holloman, recently of the L Word
Paris is Burning - essential for all drag queens or anybody who knows a drag queen or has ever dreamed of being a drag queen etc
Torch Song Trilogy - good, also might be hard, love Harvey Fierstein in this
The Birdcage - a bit too madcap for me, but Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are favorites
Boys Don't Cry - hard for a lot of people, but a really good movie, even if you believe Aphrodite Jones
Gia - oh look! Angelina Jolie plays a bisexual! what a stretch! (didn't like it)
Jeffrey - simply can't get over Captain Picard in this, no idea if it's a good movie
Pecker - love John Waters, love the lesbian stripper
L.I.E. - good teen coming of age story
Transamerica - overhyped, and who wants to see a natal woman playing a transwoman anyway
Chutney Popcorn - like My Big Fat Greek Wedding but it's lesbians having a baby
In & Out - oh look ha ha gays are funny!
High Art - boooooring
Paragraph 175 - my wife wouldn't watch it but I really liked it (about gays in Nazi Germany)
To Wong Foo... - barely squeaks by as watchable, and it's thanks to John Leguizamo's performance that I can stand it
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues - my wife loves it but I have never gotten into it
Salmonberries - another one that I don't know the plot, because I'm distracted by k.d. lang
Trembling Before G-d - kind of sad really (gay orthodox jews attempting to not live in denial)
The Times of Harvey Milk - good history lesson

Still hoping to see it -
Cruising - a classic!

Omg o_O
I never thought there where that many gay movies xD
I guess i'm kinda VERY uninformed

I'm getting Get Real this week and probably 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' right after that.
;)

Brokeback was a disappointment for lots of people. None of my friends liked it, not because they're str8 but because it felt so boring at times. But they did say there where a couple of really good scenes.

That just scratches the surface - most of those were mainstream releases. There are dozens of queer film festivals every year that have a lot of independent gay films from around the world. :)

I just remembered that there was one movie which I rather liked, but I can't remember the thrice-cursed title! It was something like "Philadelphia door" (Not that, but some long word which started with p)

It's about this gay guy who joins a men's support group and his moderately wacky adventures with them (Many of the characters are amusing, particularly the couple who runs the men's and women's support groups and are always arguing over who can use which room, etc.)

Drat my sleep-deprived brain.
