Going to Australia

ShyGuy, I love your new av! :D
Thanks :) :rose:
Gallivanting?

I thought it was a walkabout? Or am I just too CrododileDundee-ed?
I just love the term Gallivanting, which is why I used it. And also because this trip will be quite a trip.

I leave wednesday early morning, to take the train to Hamburg in Germany, from where I fly to via Amsterday to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Once we arrive in Malaysia, we'll (it's a family trip, and we're going to be 21 totally) be picked up by a bus and ride it to Penang. After a week in Penang, we head to Langkawi for the last days of the trip. On March 25th I'll say goodbye to my family, and fly to Kuala Lumpur, and then to Sydney.

My trip home starting april 9th will be: Sydney - Kuala Lumpur - Amsterdam - Copenhagen - Aalborg

I have some tips for Kuala Lumpur if you are in the airport for anytime. Go for a reflexology massage....is not very expensive and well worth the money...you can usually get in without much wait, but if there for a few hours, book it in just incase they are busy. Also if you need some rest time or just want to shower and rest in comfort while waiting for a flight, the hotel in the airport is cheap and very good. Guess you are not going to be in Amsterdam for long enough to meet at the airport?

That was a great suggestion about Kuala Lumpur airport, I might use that.

I have about 2 hours going out wednesday in Amsterdam, and less time when I go back through. So it doesn't seem like enough time to meet up unfortunately .... darn it!

Oh well, another time...we will meet sooner or later I am sure!

Another tip for Oz....try a pub meal. They are also usually inexpensive and good.:cattail:

Catalina:catroar:

We can get a huge rump steak, salad and chips for less than $20 at the pub we go to - and if I play the pokies I usually win about $10 so that ends up an even cheaper feed ;) :D

Just wanted to thank you all for the tips! This is one of my last posts today.
I might be on-line from Hamburg Airport tomorrow, but you never know.

I'll be in Sydney for a week, and then I have 2 nights at Uluru, before I fly back to Brisbane and spend 5 days driving down the coast to Sydney.

I'm up for as much fun and relaxing as I can get! To bad you aren't close by though :(

A week in SinCity. OK. Bondi Beach Obviously. Have brekky at one of the cool cafe's along the strip, go for a surf, lunch at Icebergs and walk round to Glamarama (Tamarama). It's gorgeous along the rocks etc as you walk south from Bondi. Get out on a Harbour Ferry over to Taronga Park Zoo. Wander round The Rocks and Circular Key - great pubs and great restaurants. See some live music at The Basement. Try to eat at Banque for dinner. Tetsuya's is maybe the best restaurant in Australia and a unique experience. Both are expensive, but you're coming a long way. Go up into the Blue Mountains and stay a night at Lilienfels. Have some North Shore Shopping and cafe time. Neutral Bay, Waverton, Mosman, Cremorne, Lavender Bay, Milsons Point, Cammeray. Do the Harbour Bridge climb, go to the Opera House. Go up Centerpoint Tower and have lunch or a coffee up there. If you can, do some sort of sailing on the Harbour where you aren't on a stink boat, and you can see some of the amazing mansions around the Harbour, including Kirribilly House.

Then you're in BrisVegas. Go to SouthBank Parklands and the Gallery of Modern Art, and have a coffee on James Street in New Farm. Go down and have a look at the Brisbane Powerhouse and have lunch at Watt. Wander down to Portside Wharf at Hamilton, catch a movie and a bite at Manx Restaurant, then a drink at Byblos. Go up to the Lookout at Mt Cootha and drive up to Mt Glorious and have a coffee at Mialla Cafe while watching all the Motocyclists come and go.

You may not have time to go North first, but 2 hours up the road is Noosa and it's worth going for one night. Stay on Hastings Street, eat at any of the Restaurants, but Bistro C is great. So is Sails. Walk through the National Park, round the Headland, surf at Granite Beach, check out the Art Galleries. Bloody fantastic.

Heading south, you need to stop in at the Gold Coast. Surfers Paradise is touristy, but they have a few worthwhile things and it's a buzz. Go up to the viewing deck on Q1. Eat at Marina Mirage at the Southport Spit overlooking the big expensive boats. The southern end of the Coast is more pristine. Burleigh and Greemount, Kirra etc are great beaches with cool surfshops, traditional pubs and stuff. Have lunch at Oscars at Burleigh. Literally right on the beach. Not to be missed. Head south to Byron Bay and spend a night there. Eat at The Verandah restaurant for dinner, go to Tallows Beach. Wander around looking in the shops. Stay somewhere central in Byron. Watch the Sun come up at the lighthouse, the most eastern point in Australia, have a light snack at Rae's at Wategoes and swim at Wategoes Beach, some of the most expensive real estate in Australia.

From there, it depends whether you want to go inland or along the coast. Along the Coast places like Yamba, Coffs Harbour, South West Rocks, Port McQuarrie etc are worth seeing. Closer to Sydney, some of the Northern Beaches like Palm Beach are beautiful. Others have a place in our history, like North Narabeen and Dee Why. If you can get inland a bit - check out Tamworth, the Australian home of Country Music and a great town.

It's a great trip. Have fun mate!

Thanks a lot for the advice mate! I'll give it a read through later on.

When in BrisVegas make sure that you grab a Chocolate Breaka drink from any "greasy spoon" or "servo"... the best chocolate milk in the world. And use it to wash down a packet of Twisties (chicken are my favourite)!

The best pubs for a meal are The Breakfast Creek Hotel, just east of town (past The Valley) or The Regatta which is west & along the beautiful river.

The best thing about Australia is the people.

*and send out huggy vibes to my family while you're there please"

Have to agree about the Breaka...even the light version is yum....my fave Twisties though are cheese. Also not sure I would recommend staying in Noosa as it is pricey and IMO, not worth it...the National Park which is near there though is well worth the time and effort. Lots of walking, excellent photo opportunities, unbelievable clear water (great for diving), and usually if you keep looking upward you will see koalas in the trees along the path..make sure you take a drink though as if you do the full walk, it can get thirsty.

If you do visit the Sunshine Coast and want to stay overnight, I would suggest Maroochydore as it is not as expensive as Noosa, has a great beach (most of Noosa Beach has been washed away long ago), and also has some great take away places around Cotton Tree. You can usually get a place on or close to the beachfront at a reasonable cost and walk the beach to your heart's content. Also the hinterland behind the Sunshine Coast is well worth a visit, especially the Glasshouse Mountains.

Staying in the middle of Noosa is great because you can walk everywhere. Upper Hastings Street has some units with great views at reasonable prices, right near that track/stairs that runs down to Hastings.

But Byron Bay is still brilliant. There are 3 pubs basically - the Top Pub, the Middle Pub and the Bottom Pub (Australian Hotel near the beach, Great Northern where the locals tend to go, and the Railway Friendly Bar, which I have been drinking at on surfing holidays since I was 19 and is still a good place to score a bag)

BrisVegas pubs - The Breakfast Creek Hotel is a fantastic Renovation, but you must also check out the Story Bridge Hotel. Every bit as good.

Thanks all :)

And for those of you who are reading my journal, here are some spoilers to my next update to it:

I get a haircut, like I’ve never gotten it before
I take a ride … take two
