Take it from one who knows, best to hide the naughty stuff on the 'puter. When I took my hard drive in after it had crashed, I'll swear, when I went back in to pick it up, every salesperson on the floor peeked their heads out from where they were working to get a look at me. Some even smiled....

Personally, I always clear the hard drive of all documents and defrag the disk before I send my machine in for any sort of service, but then I suppose that that tells a tale of its own, eh?

Maybe you should get a "real" computer Rob. I was wanting to get some new stuff but I always have "Ol Reliable" plugged in and ready. She has been through many changes, hardware and software, and when peoples talk about a computer blowin up they usually don't mean literally, but Ol Reliable here actually had smoke pouring out of her one time when the old power supply did actually blow up. Yes, the explosion scared me and my lil doggie half to death. I had the fire extinguisher in my hand ready when I seen all her lights had gone off and I pulled the plug.

Microfuck is the big business scourge of the earth, but they make some freakin computers that will take almost everything you can throw at them.

I have a neighbor who asked me if I knew anything about Vista OS. Well, I told him of course, I beta tested that piece of shit. He was having problems installing it and asked me to take a look. I wished I had brought my gun as he led me back into a dungeon like room. There was an antique computer, the sides off the case and a hard drive hanging out the side by its ribbon. He said he kept it that way for cooling, he, he.

I quickly ascertained the problem and told him that he couldn't load a 9 gig OS on a 2.5 gig hard drive, and besides he had nothing else even close to the minimum specs required to run Vista.

I went through his old CD's, found Windows98 and loaded it, and he loves it. Says it is just like brand new. I was thinking it was just like brand new 50 years ago but I didn't say it.

Anyways, you can get an older, not ancient, computer and have it upgraded with a decent sized hard drive fairly cheap, run Windows XP Pro, and have it ready to go anytime you Mac has an attack.

Just a suggestion.

Damn right. I have to run out and buy a new pc laptop every couple of years. That's expected. But when a friend's Mac laptop broke unfixably after a only a few years, it really shattered my faith.

Hard drive died on my 512K Mac after eight years of solid use. Fix: A buddy of mine certified to fix Macs bought in a spare he had kicking around.

Mouse on same died. Same fix.

When I first got an iMac the CD drive didn't work. Took it back, they fixed it while I waited.

This is the first problem I've had that's inconvenienced me for more than a day. In over twenty years.

My Macs may not be 'real computers' but I've never seen a blue screen of death.

As a "certified mac guy" in training, I can say the instances of Mac problems are fewer though the new Intel based systmes have been flaky then the motorola chipped ones were. But when they do have a problem, they are a pain. The emacs have no fewer than 50 screws, in 8 different sizes and threads. Pc's are usually under 10, and are all one of 2 screws.

Regardless, its great to see you back Rob, and you've just spawned a great idea for a "reading the hard drive" story...... this has real potential here.

I avoided them for years for the same reason I avoided AOL, that they placed one in a constricted apple universe the way AOL did with AOL people. But now, that all is a thing of the past. Christ, they are running Unix on a RISC chip.

I'm getting a mac notebook and I'm not going back.

I can afford to take this step because I have largely quit gaming. Gamers need a game platform, and I can see that.
