Hello, I have been going down on my girlfriend for a few months now. Every now and then, i see some white stuff on the sides of her pussy lips that don't look too appealing to me. When I brought it up, she said that sometimes that comes, and she puts some water there when she takes a shower, but doesnt put soap in there. Im pretty clueless when it comes to it, so I was wondering what is that white stuff, and should she be washing inside with water and soap thoroughly, or is it healthy to just rinse it with a little water during a shower. It's pretty difficult for me to bring it up with her too because she is shy about talking about that type of thing.

The vagina is always moist to some degree, otherwise it would hurt when walking and such. Depending on the time of the month (hormones and such) the moist will increase/decrease. It varies in thickness too. When it's thin(ner) you will notice it far less. Mine, on some days, all at once is thicker and I can actually see it (while at other days it's there just the same but less noticable).

Mostly there's no need to worry. Unless she has an infection but you would be able to smell that too then. When the white stuff is healthy it will smell no different from what your gf's vagina smells like usually.

Washing with soap is okay, but with moderation. Don't overdo it because the vagina has sort of a self regulating system for keeping it clean. You don't want to mess with that too much by using too much soap. Sugar can also be dangerous (when inserted : yeast infections!).

I think pplwatching hit in on the head, what you most likely have there is cervical mucous. It's perfectly normal and a sign of fertility. It's not something that is generated by arousal like vaginal secretions, it's a natural function of the bodies reproductive system. When it's stretchy and like egg whites, that's when she is at her most fertile, well kinda. That's the nutshell version anyway.

Personally I just wipe it away with my fingers before I start licking. No biggy, I just naturally play around aiwth my fingers a bit, so it's not really something I do intentionally. Of course now that my wife and I are trying to have kids, it is something I look for. Either way it's not anything bad, it's not a sign of poor hygiene, it's just a natural occurance.

Of course it's hard to say for sure that this is actualy CM, I would guess that's what it is. Some women I've been with used soap, some just couldn't because it irritated them too much. I didn't really notice any difference, and if it weren't for the fact of showering together, I never would have known any different. If she washes regularly and there's no fishy smell then she's fine. And I don't mean musky smell which is normal, I mean FISHY! If these elements aren't present, I'd say it's not a question of hygeine, so get in there and do you thing! :D

Absolutely not! Nor should she douche. A healthy vagina is self-cleaning.

NO, NO, NO, she should NEVER put soap or that "feminine freshness" crap in her vagina or douche unless she's specifically instructed to do so by a doctor!!!

The vagina is self-cleaning and has a very delicate balance; soap, fragrances, chemicals, food, and other stuff mess with the natural balance, which leads to infection (which will most likely make her smell terrible).

Washing daily with water is usually sufficient, though many women don't have a problem using a bit of mild, frangrance-free soap externally (ensuring none gets in the vagina) as long as they rinse well.

If you guys are uncomfortable, a sexy bath or shower or freshening up with alcohol-free, fragrance-free baby wipes before oral works well.

This is also a great opportunity to learn about her body. Here's a fantastic primer on her cycle and a really good description of the types of cervical fluid. As TBK mentioned, using certain methods to track her cycle is a safe, effective, natural way to prevent or increase pregnancy. I'm not suggesting you use it alone if you're trying to avoid, but being aware of the fertility signs can add an extra layer of protection to your current birth control plan. :)

I just vomitted the banana pudding I was eating. Guess I should have known the potential for this thread to be graphic.

YESSsssssssssssss

I'm not surprised... banana pudding???????? FFS :D

Just to get back on topic, as other people have said, what youre describing sounds perfectly normal. I wouldnt worry too much as women experience different consistencies throughout their cycle :)

It's called smegma, and I'm pretty sure all women have this to varying degrees. Ask her to wash up beforehand next time.

Thank you all so much for your help. I understand now that it is normal and I shouldnt really think twice about it.
