I have been shaving for more than ten years with out issues. But lately, I have been getting tons of razor burn and ingrown hairs. Very non appealing. Any advice? Anyone have a particular shave gel/ razor or non shaving method they like. I can't afford to go to a solon and get it done BTW, and I have never tried waxing. Anyone done it at home with good results?

I would really appreciate the feedback!:D

Are you exfoliating before you shave?

Have you tried Magic Shave Powder (a depilatory)?

My best results have been with the Schick Quattro Power razor. Yeah, the blades are expensive (any quattro blade fits any handle, BTW), but they stay sharp for a long time if you're using them on a limited area (however, you should disinfect them w/ rubbing alcohol periodically) and I usually find coupons and rebates on them in the paper, online and in drug stores (Rite Aid, Walgreens).

The gel doesn't matter quite as much, but I'm not sure if King of Shaves gel can be beat. Anything that contains tea tree oil and/or clove oil and is low on chemicals, fragrances, alcohol and other irritating ingredients is good, in my experience. Shave Secret oil is available at Walmart and is just a blend of natural oils. I've found it works well and is great for travel, but I still like the King of Shaves gel better.

I'm still experimenting with home waxing. First I tried SurgiWax microwaveable hard wax from Sally Beauty Supply. I exfoliated the night before, numbed the areas with Lanacane spray first, let them dry, dusted on some baby powder and then waxed according to the directions. Actually, Hubby did me because my first attempt on myself was kind of a disaster - it's too hard to see and apply the wax to the right areas, hold the skin taut enough and rip it off knowing it's going to hurt like an SOB. I can see doing my bikini line or legs myself, but a full brazilian is way too hard for me to accomplish without help!

I do like the longer-lasting results and idea that the hair will get finer with continued waxing, but it's definitely a hassle and very painful for me, even with the anesthetic (although I have an incredibly low pain threshold, and I know some people with higher tolerances don't find it as painful as I do). I'm going to try it a few more times with a different wax, small crockpot for keeping it warm (cheaper than a wax warmer and a multitasker if you use those special crockpot liners or foil) and prescription anesthetic, then see if I want to keep going or go back to shaving. I also waxed my armpits, though that hair grew back faster, and I've decided I'll probably stick with shaving or Magic-ing.

So, you could try waxing, but it can also be a source of ingrown hairs and irritation, and I'd advise having a trusted friend handy.

I use a product called Ingrown Go Easy Wipes which really helps me with those little red bumps and ingrown hair. I think it contains mostly alcohol and vinegar if that's any help.

I've been waxing (DIY-style) for a while now and found that it mostly hurts if I pull in the wrong direction. Took some experimenting (I still shudder when I remember starting off with cold wax stripes..not a good idea let me tell you) but what works best for me is to pull upwards in the pubic bone area and backwards/down once I head lower.

Most of the time I just shave in the shower, easy and the warm water keeps it easy and very little razor burn. If not in the shower I use the seiko clean cut it is pretty good, but you MUST use powerd or you will get razor burn like crazy! http://www.shopinprivate.com/seikcleanper.html the shape is great and you can really get into all the right spots! To wax scares the crap out of me! OUCH!

I have to second the tea tree oil. A friend mentioned it after I complained about razor bumps and irritation. I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but the stuff actually works. I still get a bump or two on occasion, but not nearly what I used to deal with, so you might want to give it a try and see if it works for you.

i always rub vaseline on after i shave, i have no idea why but it really gets rid of the razor burn.

Tree tree oil helps with razor burns, so does aloe vera. After shaving, apply liberally.

If you are going to try the waxing route, try to get it professionally done for the first time (I know you've mentioned that you can't afford it, but it might be worth it). It's less painful if someone else does it the first time, and you can observe how she does it, how taut she pulls the skin etc. A friend of mine goes to a salon once a year and she does her brazilian herself for the rest of the year. However, she uses Nair's pre-waxed strips used for bikinis instead of the heated wax. I used to do wax on my own on occasion when I didn't have time to go. Like her, I used the pre-waxed strips, followed the instructions closely, and it was fine. Not as good as if I went to get it professionally done, but in a pinch it works. Make sure you stretch the skin, and pull quickly. Oh, and prepare for a lot of time trying to get in the right position. Sometimes I wished I was a contortionist .

Personally, I favour waxing (it's an indulgence I refuse to give up). You stay smooth for a long time, and the hair grows back thinner and softer. And I guess I'm a lucky one that although I have sensitive skin, my threshold for pain is quite high. Do not attempt this alone if yours is low.

Sorry for the mini-hijack

Good luck

When I first started shaving in February I started with Magic. It was really great, but I was also introduced to Coochy Cream which I fell in love with. I love the smell of the coochy versus magic. I think that is what changed it for me. Thankfully I have been very lucky not to get bumps or ingrown.

Really? I've used these razors and I got HORRIBLE razor burn. Maybe it's the Coochy Shave Cream that prevents this?

Yep. It helps prevent nicks, razor burn/rash and also softens the skin. gotta love that freshly shaved soft and smooth feel.

Here just another tip that I used many years ago before I started with the epilady.

I still shave "lower" but for the mound area I wanted to aviod having to shave everyday and was scared to try waxing myself. And too shy (& cheap) to pay someonelse to do it.

Next time you have 10 mins free (even sitting on the couch wtaching TV if you're alone) try using tweezers. It's a great way to work towards removing the hair folicles without hot wax or anything that is an "all or nothing" situation. You pluck as many as you can in the time you have. Then I used to shave immediately after so I still got the "clean feel" without taking a step backwards and shaving the plucked hairs that had gown back. As they grow back some more repeat the pluck & then immediate shave. It depends how hairy you are as to how long or often you can do this. At some stage you will have plucked so much that the hiar is growing more sparsely & you can try waxing yourself (carefully & just a bit at a time) without having so many individual hair folicles to torture all at once.

Good Luck!

how long does a wax usually last for?

how long does a wax usually last for?

The more often you wax the longer it lasts. And it depends on how hairy you are to begin with. I used to have to shave my legs every day. Then I started waxing & I would wax as soon as the hairs gto long enough for the wax to cling to & rip them out (ouch) which was about a week. Soon the hairs were so fine that I needed to wait longer before I had something long enough to wax. I now use an epilady because it's easier & less messy and I can literally go about 6 weeks before my husband even notices that I have hair on my legs! But the epilady is so convient that if I have an event (or the beach) to go to then I can do it weekly!

It depends. As FantaSeaGirl said, the more you wax, the less hair grows - and it grows back finer and thinner. I've just had a brazilian done, and I had to wait a month and a half. Sometimes the skin is smooth for about 3 weeks, sometimes less sometimes more (the esthetician said she is smooth for 5, 6 weeks). It really depends on how well the hair is pulled, on average you're smooth for about 10 - 14 days.

Best way not to get razor burns, stubbles, pain, etc. is simply not to shave!:D

(sorry, just had to say that, I'm a hairy pussy lover myself)

Wow, I am surprised that didn't come up earlier. I like mine without hair though, i have been shaving since I was 16, now it would just feel weird not to. lol

I agree. I think once you start doing anything like this, and just add it to your usual body regimen, it does become "old hat" to do it and then feels strange when you change it. While I am not bare all the way, I do have parts of my bits that I like covered, and others I much prefer not. It's not some sort of erotic design or anything like that, just a preference.

Has anyone who does have pubic hair ever designed a shape or dyed your hair for a lover?

If you are shaving I would say please stay with it just my opinion. It is much much sexier than not.

question

First and for most the Seiko clean cut when i had it :(

But until I get around to getting a new one I have been using the bic solei triple bladed razor and Coochy Shave cream http://www.shopinprivate.com/coocshavexge.html I love this stuff and it smells great. Most adult shops carry it.

I've gone to this site, it says it's very private and ships everything in a plain box and doesn't share your info. Is this really true? thanks....

Yep. If you look around the shop they do sell items that one would consider HIGHLY personal as well in some cases embarrassing, like the back hair shaver. But yes very private and no unwanted catalogs from other company, junk mail etc.

once again erika has it right. new good quality blades if you shave.
i am partial to magic powder myself. i use it about once a week, and don't have to worry about sharp stubble.

but waxing is the best if you can scrap up some cash.

the wife loves it too, :D

Give it time. The longer you shave, hair just gets discouraged and fails to come back.

Also, you're better off leaving the mound alone and just shaving the labia majora, i.e., if you're expecting plans to land, you want to keep the runway clear. :D

I've been shaving for a few years. I have tried waxing myself a few times, once it worked pretty well, except it didn't last long, and the second time my skin got really dried out, and then later i got ingrown hairs, which were very uncomfortable, so I've decided to stick to shaving. Personally, I use a Gillette Fusion razor [yes, it's a men's razor] and I either use a really rich and creamy body wash, or my conditioner for my hair [Tre Semme "Natural"]. I haven't had any bad experiences with this. I do it in the shower or bath, after I've bathed everything else, and given my skin time to relax and my pores to open.
