I am furious beyond belief - more than I can ever remember being right now.

Here's the deal. Two weeks ago, when I received my paycheck, I saw that a huge amount of money had been taken from my paycheck. Apparently, the State did not have record of my filing a tax return in 1999 and, after sending out many letters and notices, garnished my salary.

The only problem was that I didn't know a thing about it.

I managed to talk to someone in my local Comptroller's office who, after some research, found that the reason I didn't know anything about it was because they had been sending the notices to the wrong address. Not only was it the wrong address, but the address didn't even exist in the city where I live. She admitted it was entirely their error and set about fixing it. There were more phone calls, eventually to a Top Dog in the Comptroller's office (because my being a State employee apparently makes the remedy process harder, instead of easier) and they fixed the situation. Two days later, I had a check for the money they had taken out in error, even though I had to take time off from work to drive an hour to get it. That was no problem - I was willing to do what I had to to get my money, which was sorely needed. I'm a State employee. I live paycheck to paycheck. But, things were fixed, and I was pretty happy.

Today is payday again. I get my check and guess what?

Yep. The same amount was taken out. Same reason.

This time the call to my local office was much less friendly. I want this fixed and I want my money in my hands today. Period.

The lady who helped me last time was absolutely flabbergasted. She put a call in to the Comptroller himself. I'm waiting for a return call.

This is fucking ridiculous. This should have been fixed two weeks ago. It had been fixed two weeks ago. Their office assured me that it was fixed two weeks ago. I am not a happy god-damned camper. :( I have automatic bill payment which will be posted to my account tomorrow morning and the money wont' be there. I've gone through this once with a few folks, including my landlord. I doubt they're going to buy the same story again, true though it may be. I want this fixed and I want it fixed right this fucking day - not in two days and not tomorrow.

Fuck.

May I offer a shivering body for your sadistic torture? ;)

Seriously though Jimmie, I'm sorry hon. That sucks the big one. I hope it's straightened out today. ~hugs~

Ooooh. I"m willing to take you up on that offer later, perhaps. Right now would absolutely not be safe for me to play that way. I'm angry, and not in full possession of myself. It'd be a bad thing, I think. :(

It'll be fixed today, or there's going to be one hell of a shitstorm in every High Muckity-Muck's office in their Department, and the Governor's.

Careful what you saw you know THEY listening.

Ok, this isn't anywhere near my fields of expertise, but you may try having your calling your bank, and the company that's taking money out of your account (by the way, I can't even begin to tell you how dangerous that is) and getting a fax for them from your comptroller.
Good luck!

Damn that sucks...look on the bright side tho...at least the woman really is trying to get your problem fixed...but may not be up to her.

sunstruck, That would be the easy way to handle the situation, and would work perfectly if I worked for a private organization. Unfortunately, I work for the State, and things get difficult, because there are levels of bureaucracy I have to hurdle first.

Oooh!!!!! An update!

My angel in the local office here just called me to let me know that they are cutting me a check immediately. Further, they're not insisting that I pick it up in person and they've even offered to overnight it to me, if that's what I wished. I'm having my boss get it for me, since he's up right next door to their main office.

Thank God for a relative peon who doesn't hesitate to call the Top Guy to get the problem fixed. :D

Congrats!!! Now stay on top of them!! Call down to payroll the day before they cut the checks and make sure you're go go!

Ah hell, JMJ......

Wait till next month when they take out the amount again PLUS the amount they mistakenly returned to you!!!!

Oh you're just a peach, man.

As of right now, things are okay.

My Local Woman is ont he case, keeping an eye on my account, to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Apparently, this has really embarassed the Top Dogs up there and they definitely do not want it to happen again.

Jimmie, send her a small gift to let her know how much you appreciate her. It never fails to please the peons. :)

God, there's nothing more attractive than a man on a mission who knows what he wants. ;)

Well, I had already written a commendation letter to the Comptroller and Deputy Comptroller. I had intended yesterday on dropping a copy of that letter by her office; however, I got the perfect opportunity to do it anyhow.

So, here's the final update, and the last truly strange twist. Even though it took him an hour, my boss picked up the check for the money they took and brought it to me when he got to where I am. On the check should have been my name, address, and social security number. That's a pretty standard thing.

Well, on the check was my name...almost. They had me as a "James", when I'm really a "Jimmie". The address they listed wasn't mine either. It wasn't even an address near anywhere I've ever lived. It wasn't even in the same county where I lived.

So I made a photocopy of the check. Luckily my bank cashed it for me (the cashier knows me and knws the problem I'd had). I took the copy of the letter in , to shorten the story greatly, made a couple people in the office shake their heads in absolute disbelief. They have no idea whatever why they listed my name wrong nor why they put that address on the check. She told me that she would be keeping an eye on my account, to ensure that this never happened again, and I definitely believe her. She's a sharp lady, and knows exactly what she's doing.

The thing that baffled me the most was when she told me that she got a call from one of the Top Dog's assistants, demanding a reason why this happened to me again. There's no way she could have known that. She was the one who did all the work to clear it in the first place and the problem existed solely in their main office. Damn I hate it when the peons get yelled at when there's no way they were even part of the problem. :(
