Never a fan, but saw a promo for her upcoming interview with Larry King. Her picture shocked me, and frankly scared the shit out of me - mostly because she has the same makeup artist she always had. Cancer (more than age, I think) has severely taken its toll on the 82 year old.

My prayers to you and all others, here and elsewhere, fighting and coping with cancer.

She isn't 82, she's 65. I just checked an article and it says she only weighs 65 lbs because of the ravages of cancer. Even at only 4'11" that isn't much.

Anyway, I didn't really know much about her except for the makeup and the televanglism. But I remember seeing her on the Drew Carey show playing Mimi's mother and I was impressed that she could see herself in a comical way.

But I was really impressed when I saw her on the surreal life. She was in a house with Vanilla Ice, Erik Estrada, Ron Jeremy, Traci Bingham and Trishelle Cannatella. Anyway, she was amazingly charming and gracious throughout the whole thing (except when Ron Jeremy had a naked pool party, but even then she chose to retreat rather than confront). The fact that all the others in the house spoke so well of her, and were so moved by her impressed me. The most interesting part was the book signing where I learned she is basically the patron saint of transvestites.

Wow!! You're right - I googled her birth date. I would have sworn the promo said she was 82. They did get the weight right, though. You know, I caught snippets of the Surreal Life and also was impressed by her dignity, charm and grace as well. I think I'll finally go rent that old movie, 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye.'

I always thought that she and Jim really got screwed just because they were the least politically connected of the slimey televangelists. If a bunch of yolds want to shell out $283,000 to a rent a timeshare in Jim and Tammy Faye's Happy Pharisee Bible Village and Second Coming Shopping Mall just so they can be ready for the Rapture, what business is it of the government's? Here the Christer's with the political punch are walking around free while the only thing Jimmy and Tammy Faye were guilty of was bad taste and looking too much like bobblehead dolls.

Jim was ruined. Did what--like 7 years hard time?--and the only thing that saved Tammy Faye was that the gays adopted her for her camp value. She turned out to be a real Christian soul under that clown makeup too, which is more than you can say for Falwell and those other maniacs.

I never thought of their situation in quite that way, Zoot.

Yes, I did own of those shirts with makeup smeared that said - "I ran into Tammy Faye at the mall."

They were so easy to ridicule. Now I feel sort of ashamed.

Yes. I think Jimmy got (sigh) hosed by Jessica Hahn. Not that what he did was right, not what she did was wrong...but. In the end Jimmy and Tammy were no different than snake oil salesman updated to real estate. I liked her in the reality show, though. Jim was a harder sell.

I always did kind of detect a bit more depth in Tammy, and I was mostly irritated by the fact she hung out with that loser Jim, whom I don't believe has probobly ever had a sincere moment in his life.

Well, I'm 25, and I'm not really well versed in all of the hoopla that went on when I was a kid, but from what I've seen of her she seems like a really genuine person.

I just saw the interview on Larry King. I have to admit I cried.
I'm not one much for tears, but it hits close to home as my grandmother bravely and gracefully died in October, soon after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My grandmother still had her humor and wit about her when she passed. She had a good death. I only hope that I can be as brave and inspirational as she was.

Tammy Faye is in a lot of pain. I just hope that she gets to say all of her goodbyes, and that her family has a sense of closure when she goes.

I'm sorry. Sounds like you were very close to your grandmother.

Tammy Faye does seem strong. I think she'll have said her goodbyes.

I never cared for Tammy Fae Baker or her slime-ball husband, Jim. Both of them were no better than the rest of the scum that haunts TBN, bilking the elderly and stupid out of there hard earned cash in the name of a fradulaunt ministry.

I'm sorry Tammy has cancer, but no more so than the pity I have for any other cancer patients.

We all will die. The main thing is how you will be remembered. That comes from what you have done in your life. I know how I will remember her.

I need one of those! I'll trade my tshirt that says, "Oh my God! I forgot to have children!"

Thanks to all the make-up seeping into her pores over the years her head will likely mummify rather than decompose. Thousands of years from now, after humans have rendered themselves extinct and, by sheer luck, mandrills evolve into the next highly intelligent species, they'll excavate her pickled head and worship it as a portent of the mandrill Gods. Eat your heart out Dr. Zaius.

Actually, as I understood it, it wasn't that they were peddling salvation for bucks like Jimmy Swaggart and Pat Robertson and other horrible people, it was that they overselling the shares (a la "The Producers"), which is a crime no matter what. I was pleased that Jim Bakker did hard time. I'm sorry that nobody's been able to stop the really bigtime pimps, because it's true: Jim & Tammy Faye were fairly small fry.

I can't find the exact shirt I had, though these are at CafePress.

Mine was sort of more smeared, not exactly a face. Anyway.

Oh! I can trade you my button that says "Oh, Shit! I've turned into my mother!"

Will that work?

Nooo! I want that one - I'll swap you for *my* button that says 'well aren't we a ray of fucking sunshine today?'

OK.

I have another button I love - "I gave myself to Jesus but now he never calls"

No?

Tammy Faye Messner dies
Televangelist was 65

BREAKING NEWS
Updated: 11 minutes ago

RALEIGH , N.C. - Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then saw it collapse in disgrace, died Friday. She was 65.

Messner, who had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs, died at her home, said her booking agent, Joe Spotts. A family service was held Saturday in a private cemetery, where her ashes were interred, he said.

She had frequently spoken about her medical problems, saying she hoped to be an inspiration to others. “Don’t let fear rule your life,” she said. “Live one day at a time, and never be afraid.”

But she told well-wishers in a note on her Web site in May that the doctors had stopped trying to treat the cancer.

Hey - yay us for having a thread before the event in which we learned and said nice things about the fact that she was actually gracious and genuine in her own way.

RIP, Tammy. :rose:
