For GM writers interested in judged rather than popular vote contests, there's one on (deadline 1 June) at http://www.barbarianspy.com (Click on "Writing" and "B&S Awards.") Judges are a novelist/book editor and a reviewer for Rainbow Reviews. Theme of this contest running is "first times." Word limit is 3,000 words. Limited to the first 50 entries. It's for stories e-published in 2009 (posting here on Lit. would qualify). The high three winners receive a review posted to BarbarianSpy that they can use anywhere they want; the story isn't reprinted at BarbarianSpy--a link is given to where it's published. The top ten placers receive a private critique by the judges. All entries will be notified which third they placed in.

This is a contest that concentrates on the comparative quality of the content rather than on how many friends you can muster to vote for you.

Are you judging blind?

Are you judging blind?

Not possible with the logistics--there's no third party to maintain a blind listing. I don't think that matters much, though. If you'll check back on my reviews of last year's Lit. Earth Day Contest (http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=358806 is the first of three reviews--the other two can be traced from this one), I think you can see that I judged each story on its own merits regardless of who wrote it.

K. I just like the "blind" contests better. I know judges can judge without prejudice... but judging blind assures it, kwim? ;) Hm. Maybe eXcessica should do one. In my spare time. *snerk*

I also think the blind ones are best. This is better than an author popularity contest, though, I think. Maybe for the next one, it could be done in conjunction with eXcessica and you could receive the entries and send them to the judges blind--in your spare time. :D

And then eXcessica could publish the winners, because Selena doesn't have enough submissions to work with yet ;)

sir, this sounds like a great contest; I hope you enjoy judging it. I'd enter, but I haven't managed to write a GM yet this year; my muse seems to have decided he's more into MF, group sex, and FF at the moment. Dumb muse.

Although I think they're only taking "published" entries? (Although if Lit counts as published, then I could put them into the ebook market, certainly...)

Honestly, if you run another one, LMK. It wouldn't be that difficult to organize them to be judged blind and send them along. ;)
