It was 9 o'clock on a Saturday night in late September. Jason "Jake" Daniels was back in his small office, the invitation envelope slowly being twirled in his hands like somehow it would figure out the answer he had been wrestling with over a week. Should he go back, would she be there, would it matter?
Danville High School would be celebrating its 25th reunion in two weeks. He laughed sarcastically, 25 years ago he had been the biggest thing to hit Danville High School in, well...ever. Today he was the subject of the "whatever happened to" question, that he wanted to kill the person who next asked. He had taken the small high school to its only state title in school history, before or since, and he had just announced his decision to commit and presumably be the next star quarterback, at THE Ohio State. Jim Tressel was the new coach, and when he met with Jake, they were both confident he was the future of the storied football program, and he was quite confident he would start as a freshman, and probably be a first round NFL draft pick three years later. Good student, great athlete, charming, he was the entire package. His future was set, everyone knew it,certainly everyone in Danville knew it. The "future" lasted 5 practices.
He was running a simple quarterback bootleg, the quarterback running out to his left or right with a run pass option. He wasn't even hit, he just planted wrong in the turf and the tendons in his knee gave, a total and complete blow out, and the inside of his knee looked more like a plate of spaghetti than the knee of a future first round pick. Medical technology was not what it is today, and the doctor was firm and quick with his diagnosis. He won't play football again, he should walk again, arthritis would likely start impacting him significantly before he was 30.
Devastated, he stopped attending class, attending life, despite the efforts of coaches and officials. He flunked out after the first semester, and thus began a 15 year tailspin of too many pain killers, too much alcohol and too much self loathing. As he sat in a jail cell in Columbus for drunk and disorderly, it was actually Tressel, who found out he was there, and gave him the thorough, "come to Jesus" ass kicking he had needed. The next 5 years were a combination of rehab and recovery, he got a job as a local bartender in Columbus, became the manager, then partner, and now as of 6 months ago, he was the sole owner of Buckeye Bar and Grill.
He looked down at the envelope, did he really want to answer all of the questions again, relive the glory which only brought back the utter disappointment of promise unfulfilled. He knew how the story ended. But then again he thought of Mary Anne, his high school sweetheart, the girl who they took each other's virginity, the only girl he really ever loved. He had to get this romantic sht out of his mind...now who was caught in the Glory Days? He opened the drawere and was just about to "file" the invite when his cell phone rang with a number he didn't recognize....
