With all the Media and Moron Senators focusing on Enron an interesting thing is developing with bankrupt Global Crossing.Global Crossing has laid broadband fiberoptics around the world.Since they went belly up <4th largest in History> certain companies out of HongKong have been sniffing around to pick up the pieces,These companies are reported to have ties to our good friends the Peoples Republic of China,The same people who run the Panama Canal. The rumor is that the defense department uses these lines to communicate around the world,If this is indeed true should anyone care?

Of course you should not care. It has nothing to do with Republicans. The only scandals are with Democrats which makes it culturally taboo. You might hurt Barney Frank's feelings.

That is also why we are supposed to ignore how Tom Dashle and his wife conspired to kill forest rangers.

Yes, Global Crossing has lots of Pentagon and other contracts. It's a big cause for worry. There should be others standing up to make the acquisition.

Other Chinese? Or just 'others'? :p

Seriously though, I'd never heard of this development. My understanding of global finance is, at best, non-existent; although I have a sneaking suspicion that the highest bidder tends to get their way in such cases. Good luck one and all ... ["as if I care"].

The primary company involved is Hutchison-Whampoa. They were a reputable Hong Kong company which is now under the administration of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

And I do believe these are the same people now managing the Panama Canal.

I think having the Chinese Communist Army own or control the majority of the world's fiber optic digital communications network is a splendid idea. Right up there with selling or giving them Missile Guidance Technology (Loral) and Nuclear Weapons Design information out of Los Alamos.

And you're right; there are no potential links to the Bush administration so there should be no investigation into it because that might produce some not so good publicity for the Democrat Party, e. g., Terry McCauliff who bought $100K of Global's stock and sold it for $18M.

Hey, but look on the bright side, finally a Democrat more savvy and astute in the market than even Hillary's Cattle Futures deal!

oh c'mon guys...now you're complaining because the dems are taking enron to task when the repubs spent how much sniffing out the moral implications of a blowjob?

each side takes its turn dragging the other through the legal muck and each side has managed to dupe the media into following merrily along

it's enough to make a girl want to turn libertarian

and yes, if you want to know, this one does worry the bejesus out of me, regardless which fat cat skimmed his share as the titanic sank

I'm not suprised by these revelations, for the almighty dollar/euro/lire/yen/mark/etc...
What's the old Communist saying? "The last Capitalist will be hung with their rope that they sold to us." (something like that)
Fuck-o-dear!

Tom Daschle conspired to kill forest rangers? Are you serious? What did he do, demagnetize their compasses so they'd get lost in the woods and starve to death?

I think Tom Daschle is an asshole (hey that almost rhymes..Daschle/asshole...Daschle/asshole...say it with me), but I really doubt he has a vendetta against forest rangers.

And you wonder why almost no one takes you seriously around here. Silly Androgeny.

What about using the cable instead of rope? I never thought of Communists as fibre optic strangulation fetishists before! Sounds kinky, which doesn't bode well for the future of all that cable ...

But:

... our various global democracies have to be about more than just profit margins and numbers (as in dollars / votes, or even in some cases a combination of the two). If not, then the growing Chinese economy and, of course, the sheer volume of their 'electorate' mean that all's fair in 'fibre optic love' and any electronic talk of 'war'.

There is a middle ground (I hope):

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed [...] This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its labourers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children." -- Eisenhower, circa 1953

The potential acquisition of this company says as much about the 'Capitalist' mentality as it does about alleged 'Communist ' threats. No need for recourse to historical anecdote here, although given the global political climate at the moment I can understand the concerns raised. When it comes down to big business the adage "greed is good" springs to mind, which does add a new dimension to the undercurrent of 'good' versus 'evil' which has been hinted at thus far ...

Even a realist is allowed to dream surely? :)

I didnt hear anything about killing forest rangers,I did hear that Tommy did attach an ammendment to the defence appropiations bill passed in December,The attachment was for the American Taxpayer to pay for the clean up of some old mine in South Dakota that had been in operation for over 100 years. Now the mining company wanted to sell out to some Canadian company,The Canadian company said sure we will be happy to buy your little company, but first we want assurances that the dirty little mine be cleaned up.Well little Tommy added over 500 million to the clean up effort in the form of the attachment to the defense bill.So the little fucker sticks it to the taxpayer! I cant have a paltry tax cut but that little moron can waste our money. His wife is a lobbiest for the airline, see haow fast they were bailed out,But I doubt she had anything to do with that! They probably dont talk about such things.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Just once I would like to see some "reporter"question him about this kinda stuff,Unfortuneately it will never happen.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The mine cleanup should at leat in theory be payed by Superfund. Unfortunately the legislation that enabled taxing of corporations to pay for that went out of effect during the Clinton Administration. The Republican Congress refused to pass the legislation again, and now the new Administration is trying to stick it to the taxpayers. There was an article in the NY Times a few days ago.
The superfund as I recall became a cashcow for attorneys, and much of the superfund money was wasted,Even if the legislation was for the companies to pay for clean up the cost was eventually passed onto the consumer. I quess I dont see it as a Dem/Rep issue as I dont think these people are out for anyone but themselves.
