I hate smarm and I hate sentimentality, probably because I'm a smarmy sentimentalist at heart.

I recently went through a very bad spell. A falling-on-the-floot-and-chewing-the-carpet bad spell. I'm talking about the kind of depression that is so bad that it feels like a toothache in your soul, where it hurts just being alive, and from which I could get no relief, not from shrinks, not from friends or family, not from medicine and drugs. But I got it from some pornographers on this site.

I especially want to thank Perdita, who quite literally saved my ass when I thought it wasn't worth the trouble of saving, and who did it with grace, wit, and warmth, and without a whiff of smarm or a single cliche. She's a formidable presence whom I was lucky to meet just when things got to be really unbearable, and I don;t think anybody else could have done what she did for me.

I'd also like to thank Annabellee2003, who was playing an SRP game with me and who stepped out of character to be real for a while.

And the same to everyone else who keeps this place doing whatever it does: grinding out words of lust and profanity and all the other crap human beings seem to care about. I appreciate you all.

Well, most of you. Some of you are just real pains in the ass.

That's all I wanted to say.

Please don't respond to this with smarmy tales of sentimentality of your own. No fucking sympathy. Let's face it: life is rough and it's only other people who make it bearable. I just wanted to point out some of them and thank them in public.

all the same( ;) )... i'm glad you're still around.

odd how there's been mention of depression in several different places now... thank god we're given the strength to at least speak of it and not ignore it like it's some kind of disease.

take care dr.M. you're needed to keep my feet on the ground.

Most of the time it feels like the other way round.

... and cute little puppies* and koala bears and orgasms and gratuitous sex and Pez and Saturday afternoon naps and chenille sweaters and Claire de Lune and Bach's cello suites and Thai food and key lime pie and thunderstorms and ghost stories and Hitchcock movies and multiple orgasms and sock puppets and Casablanca and Toy Story (1 and 2) and expensive wine and chocolate-covered strawberries and Macbeth and Wonderland and Oz and snowstorms and really good hair days.

*un-microwaved!

Wonderful string of lovelies; I'd leave out the puppies and koalas (I'm just not into cute) but I especially love that you included the cello suites, Hitchcock and Macbeth. I would only add Dr. M.

Thanks, Perdita

*singing out of tune*

Raindrops and roses, and whiskers on kittens... ;)
Flick: it's raindrops *on* roses (adds to the cuteness).

You always sing the right tune (even if you're out of it). P.

but not only raindrops

In my garden it is not just raindrops on roses.

It is greenfly, mildew and bird crap!

Dear Svenska,
Don't forget "brown paper packages tied up with string." It probably contains a hippopotamus turd.

Or, like a Swedish stand-up comedian answered on a pop quiz about gardening:

Host of TV-show: If you find strings of slime in your garden, what conclusion can you draw from this?
Comedian: That my daughter has found herself a new boyfriend.

LOL-ing

O, if only we amerikens were so wittily advanced. Perdy

This thread is an excellent illustration of Gresham's Law at work.

Doh!

Forgive my ignorance Dr M, but what is Gresham's Law, please?

Bad material drives out good material. I've done a lot of that lately, so I think I'll have to be more careful.

Quality

Who defines what is good, and what is bad?

If Lit votes are any judge, good = wankable. Literary merit comes way down the list.

The Lit Stories cover every variety and style. Rejection is not usually on aesthetic grounds.

Enjoy the variety but lets see the good as well.

Og.
