Girl with a Pearl Earring

I'm off to write a 100,000 poem for ange's thread that may not actually be about poems using 100,000 in them.
Anyway, I'm going to work on one for this image. It's such a great image. Where is it from?

It's from a painting of Vermeer.

Vermeer's use of light and shadow, as evidenced in this portrait, are second to none, IMHO. The cracks in her face are very interesting, and the whites of her eyes are stunning.

Inspiring, to say the least, WSO.

I saw the movie and it alone stirs the muse <grin..

yes this picture has a poem or two in it <grin I'll see what I can come up with;

perhaps it shines more eloquently when worn by another
for a maid to display such beauty grasps not some
an artist dances with brushes in hand
to reveal the beauty of innocence
the Girl with the Pearl earring

Thank you. It looked familiar, but I couldn't think of the name.

Damn Wicked, that bottom photo has got me cupping my hands and trying to weigh a couple of spheres.

*must open a window*

There are eyes and lips, but to me so little expression. I am sure there is a poem there. Maybe due to the lack of expression. I'll have to think about it.

If only once
And not so long ago

Your second glance
Would have caught sight
Of my desire

Instead of looking back
I’d be looking forward
To a moment
Or eternity
Spent entwined
Our world a perfect pearl

I see the world
Eyes open
How it might have been

My lips parted
Offer words of regret
Of kisses passed up

Goodbye my darling
In the fleeting glance
You never made

it's beautiful Fool. :rose:

i need to work on this a lot more (only wrote it a couple of hours ago) but i said i'd post it tonight so...

Girl with the Pearl Earring

There is hope in her child eyes
as she watches her lover
paint. She sits so still
while his brush strokes
and taps the canvas like rain pelting
windows, that ochre dries
on the edge of the pot. Innocent love
lingers in the orb
of eyes that no longer blink
and white health emanates
from a body that belongs to saints.
Youth blossoms from behind
her painted lips
and her hope reaches
to grip your heart like talons
of an eagle
holding his prey.

Isn't this the movie where she played the part of a slave. Well, somewhat. Like a maid in a rich home where the husband falls in love with her, and the wife is a royal bitch?

And yes, I see a poem. I see sadness, darkness. Dare I bore you with another?

if the urge is there to write, then write. *smile*

yes, that's the movie. she was a servant in a house in Holland.

post your poem, i'd like to read it. :)

For Christ sake! I tried. I deleted and wrote, deleted and wrote, and deleted again. I studied the picture, looked deep in her eyes, remembering the movie, wrote and deleted multiple times, then cried. It's too fucking sad!

so, write sad if it's what you feel. just write it.

(write whatever the painting says to you - forget the movie.)

i'm still editing mine.

amazing what a little tweaking here and there can do to a poem!

I cant wait to read the completed poem WSO

You write from the heart and what you 'feel' <WG>

I agree with you about writing what you feel and not what you think you should write...

Blessings

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I'm getting there Kiwi

OK Here goes

Lips parted
Pearl white teeth
Eyes deep
That will sweep

The artist
His brush a tool
His palette
Shades colours cool

Her face
Cherished in oil
Upon a canvas
Who non shall spoil

A wisp of youth
Yet seeing all
Her face shall tell
That knowing call

Expression captured
Locked forever
Her image stored
To last forever…

no sweaty mondo Tess. i was going to post the full portrait today at any rate :D thanks for saving me the task. ;)

fancy resizing it a little - it doesn't fit on my screen very well. (and just as an aside, i feel that the black background says as much as the young woman herself.)

How's this? It's a few 100 pixels smaller.
