I am doing some graphics work for another forum but i am having trouble with GIMP. I tried using my paintbrush but it stays on black no matter how many times I try to change the color. It will select it but when i go to paint its still black. I checked the mode of the image and it is on RGB.

I am skype now if anyone can help me with the problem. My skype is chasemepleez

I have not used GIMP - but on assuming you are trying to paint on top of an indexed image like a gif - open the original then duplicate it to a new layer. Delete the original layer. Should be set to go with RGB in this new layer.

I haven't used GIMP recently enough to help you troubleshoot, but I'd suggest asking for help on one of the GIMP forums. Find the largest/most active community and repost your issue there. :)

What is the mode of your paintbush? And what version of GIMP are you using?

( Tentative guess is that GIMP adopted a mode for the brush from the pic - without telling you )

My experience is that graphic apps tend to have a life of their own. Mostly I use Xara; and mostly it works. But occasionally .... My first defence is to shut down and start again. If that doesn't work, I save what I have in a different format - jpeg or similar - and then start again. Nine times out of ten it works. Don't know why.

which goes back to duplicate the layer and work off that

LOL!

well.

This thread is not what I thought it would be about!:D

The person who can solve this problem can pick how I repay hr or she.

So Far I have:
  • checked the mode on the pic, which was on RGB
  • checked the mode of the brush, which was normal
  • I was using multiple layer

Please Help. I am designing a new type of web comment grpahic for my space and this has put a major road block in my work.

Just tried opening a blank image and paint on that and its having the effect. It will not et me chance to any other color but black

I've used GIMP for quite a while without encountering this issue, so I'm not sure that I can be much help. :(

I wonder, however, whether the problem might correspond to the one described in this thread from the GIMP forums. If so, then it seems to be a bug that has appeared in GIMP 2.8.0 and above. Here are a couple of quotes:

The issue here is a bug that happens when trying to pick a color from the image with the "dropper" button next to the HTML value of the color. The color is always set to black rather than the actual color from the image.
The color picker tool works absolutely fine. On the other hand, clicking on the foreground color and using the color picker option from that dialog box always changes the color to black.
If that's the case, then a possible workaround might be to use the colour picker tool instead. Is that possible?

Alternatively, from the same thread:

In a Gimp canvas the picker picks the color from the active layer. If you pick the color where the layer is transparent, it can be picked as black (transparent layers are initialized to all zeros, in other words, to "transparent black").
I think that's just a matter of ensuring that you have selected the correct layer (which I imagine that you will have done, but I thought it was worth checking just in case not! :)).

Just tried opening a blank image and paint on that and its having the effect. It will not et me chance to any other color but black
Unfortunately, that makes it sounds as if neither of the above is the problem, and that there's an enduring problem with your GIMP setup. :(
