"Ah, the mysterious elder wolf." Rissa said as she gave Qira a grin. "I'll never be trusted enough to meet Khelt, I'm afraid. He's only for those in the queen's inner circle to know."

"We don't decide who he meets. He does. And if you stay near Warwick long enough, Khelt will be interested if he is not already," Qira assured her. "I would be surprised if he does not already know about you."

"Oh, he probably does. He probably already knows all about what happened in France." Rissa said as she gave him a chuckle. "And he's probably already told Warwick his opinions on the matter. I wouldn't be here today if he didn't like me."

"True," Qira cracked a tiny smile at that, then asked, "How do you know about him?" He knew Khelt and the Aleister Wolves had a widespread reputation, but few had ever come into contact with them and lived til Kell became Lord Protector.

"From a little bit of gossip here and there." Rissa said with a shrug of her shoulders. "I come into contact with all sorts on my farm. They like to talk."

"What sorts?" Qira asked, interested to know who might be visiting her farm and for what. "Do you still work in your old trade?"

"No. I haven't since France. I have no want to go back to that life." Rissa said as their meal was served and she found herself looking at lovely lamb and vegetables on a plate. "I don't discriminate against anyone. If someone needs shelter or a job, I will provide it. If you must know, many of your old comrades live on my lands and in my village."

"I know of a few." Qira set aside the now-empty whiskey glass as the meal was served, taking his time about tucking into the food as he knew there was no rush. "Some are still active, if rarely."

"I don't ask questions. They raise my crops, tend to my barns, work the taverns and inns. They have an honest life." Rissa said as she ate. "I'm sure that it causes headaches for Kell, but as long as they are honest with me, I have nothing to worry about."

"Kell usually lets former agents go if he can be sure they really left our line of work," Qira assured her. "He believes in second chances, in most cases."

"Again, I have nothing to worry about with them." Rissa said as she glanced back up at Qira. "I've only had one that disappeared in the night and I never saw him again. I've heard that he's somewhere on the mainland. I never cared to find out what he was doing now."

"I could find out," Qira shrugged as if the tracing and tracking of a professional agent wanting to disappear was no bother.

"I only track the ones I am suspicious of," Qira assured her. "I have let many go unfollowed."

"And I suppose you'll be tracking me from now on." Rissa said, looking at him with a slight grin. "You'll never get away from it, Panther."

"I keep track of those who come in contact with Kate's inner circle," he said simply as if it were nothing.

"I'm sure that you do. However, do you take those people to dinner as you're doing now?" Rissa asked, knowing that Qira might have had a little bit of a crush on her. "I don't think so."

"I-... Well..." Qira looked a little cornered, but then muttered quietly, "You wanted to... And it felt rude to say no..." He silently wished he had the vocabulary to respond correctly, but he knew he'd probably be at a loss in any language.

"I'll let that slide, for now." Rissa chuckled as she finished up her meal and relaxed with her wine. "So tell me, panther, has her majesty always been so difficult? Don't get me wrong, she has warmed up slightly to me in the past couple of weeks, but she is still far away from being friendly."

"I have learned that she warms to few people quickly. And women even less. But the court has made her even more defensive," Qira explained, glad for the change in subject. "I was lucky to be friendly with her early, because of Kell."

"Rumor has it that her father isn't her father." Rissa said as Qira tried to explain to her why Kate acted the way that she did most of the time. "I think I would be an angry young woman if I discovered something like that about myself."

"I try not to ask painful questions of her. But I had thought she made peace with knowing who her real father was." Qira wasn't one to talk about Kate's business much more than that. "She does not speak about it, and she does not pay attention to those that question it."

"Sometimes you have to ask difficult questions in order to truly understand someone." Rissa said as Qira quickly mentioned that he tried not to ask painful questions of Kate. "And sometimes it makes the other person understand that they can't simply be a terrible person."

"You can risk asking. I know what I need to know from Kell." Qira wouldn't share Kate's secrets with anyone unless she was in danger, and only with Kell or select people.

"Perhaps I will. I enjoy watching her struggle with her temper." Rissa murmured as Qira cut off her line of questioning. "I don't deal well with petulant children and if she acts like one, I will treat her like one."
