"I don't think I want him to come with us. As much danger as I'm in, I can only imagine how much danger a white tiger would be in." Kate said as she sat down next to Khan and let him have all the attention that he could possibly want.

"Maybe. Though I've never known Ballas to have much trouble." Kell rose to put aside his jacket and bandolier before changing into something more comfortable. He soon fell back on their bed with a long sigh, closing his eyes.

Kate watched as Kell got comfortable and relaxed on their bed, a long sigh issuing from his lips. She soon left Khan on the floor and moved to her husband. Straddling his hips, she was soon leaning down to kiss him, her wild curls forming a curtain around them as she stared down into his amber gaze.

"I demand a vacation." Kate whispered. "i will be petulant and difficult until I get one."

"So... Normal?" Kell murmured, gazing up at her with a tiny smirk. His hands came to rest on her hips naturally, comfortable with her familiar weight against him.

"Worse than normal, I'm afraid." Kate said as she saw that tiny smirk. "How else will you know I'm serious if I don't act even more contrary than a usual day?"

She settled down against his chest, her head finding her favorite spot on his shoulder as she let out a long sigh. "I don't want a lady in waiting. I don't want to waste my time looking at candidates. I don't want anything to do with that side of court."

"I won't make you, no one else will either. But if my grandfather approved someone, maybe she deserves a chance. She could be helpful for keeping things organized and running smoothly on your end." He pressed a kiss to her forehead. "My grandfather doesn't send troublesome or useless people our way."

"If I don't meet with her, Warwick will pester me every chance that he gets until I do meet with her. I'd rather not have to match wits with the old man, although I'm sure he'd enjoy it." Kate said with a long sigh as Kell kissed her forehead. "Surely the Scottish royal family has a place like Inverlochly where they can disappear and have a moment to themselves."

"We can disappear anywhere you like," Kell assured her, closing his eyes. "You just pick the place. Inverlochly, Skye, Normandy, or even just someplace in the middle of the woods."

"Somewhere on the sea where we can fish and hunt and relax." Kate said softly as she closed her eyes as well, letting sleep take her after so long on edge.

When Kate woke in the early evening, she was tucked into bed alone with the hearth crackling merrily off to the side. Kell's voice was just barely audible outside the room, speaking to a servant. It was growing dark outside, and everything seemed quiet and at peace. When Kell entered, it seemed he'd been up for a while, fully dressed in his usual dark outfit and bandolier, focused and calm as ever.

"Do you ever just relax?" Kate asked, pulling the blankets tighter around her shoulders as she watched her husband walking around the room. "Like take a load off your shoulders and not think about everything?"

"Not really," Kell answered simply. "Neither do you, though." He made his way over to the desk in the corner and rifled through some papers in a drawer. "Just checking in on who this woman is that my grandfather seems to approve of."

"You seem convinced that I'll like her enough to take her into my employ." Kate said as Kell rifled through the papers on his desk.

"She certainly sounds lovely from all I've been told thus far. But she's far from a traditional court lady. She reminds me of you a bit... But calmer and less stubborn for the sake of being stubborn. Her name is Rissa."

"What kind of name is Rissa?" Kate asked, wrinkling her nose as Kell tried to convince her otherwise in talking to this new woman. "And what exactly have you been asking about her?"

Kell rolled his eyes at her with a smirk. "Her background, skills, hobbies, why she would want to work for a grouch like you, that sort of thing."

"She would be a glorified servant, Kell. You're talking about her like she's one of your recruits or a prized mare." Kate said as Kell mentioned that she was a grouch. "And I'm not a grouch. I just wish people would leave me alone from time to time."

"If she's going to be working closely with you, that means she'll be working closely with Qira and I. So she might as well be one of my recruits," he shrugged, coming to her side and resting his head on his arms. "And if you wanted people to leave you alone, you shouldn't have become a queen. You chose the one job that makes sure you never have peace."

"i'm a glutton for punishment." Kate said as he stared at her from the side of the bed, his chin resting on his arms. "It's why I married you."

"That makes us both masochists, seeing as I married you." He tilted his head as he looked at her. "So... I had a question for you once we were settled back in... Why didn't you tell me you were hurt in Rothbury?"

Kate's green eyes found his as he asked her why she had never told him that she was hurt. She let out a long sigh and knew that they might soon be in the middle of a fight.

"What would you knowing that I had been hurt have changed?" Kate asked softly. "You have the world on your shoulders in situations like that and as much as I would like you to be at my side when something like that happens, I know you have a duty to finish the fight."

"I wouldn't have left your side if I'd known, then you wouldn't have been at such a risk in Foulden despite Qira's best efforts." Kell shook his head slowly. "It isn't your fault, but I wonder if I could've spared him all this suffering if I'd been there."

"Kell, you need to know that your grandfather has people looking after me as well. Whether you realize it or not." Kate said softly. "He won't say it to me himself, but I know."

"I know, he has one or two keeping tabs on me as well. It's so that even if our network is compromised, he can get trustworthy information from a separate source, and he knows if I fail, his people can step in immediately. It's all failsafes."

"Hence why you knowing that I was injured or attacked wasn't that urgent in the scheme of things." Kate said. "You're my husband and I know you have a right to know, but there are some things that aren't important in the moment."
