"And just what has you so happy tonight?" Julia asked as she settled into her seat, glancing up at Brogan as he seemed so incredibly pleased about something. "Is someone in trouble and this is just the calm before the storm?"

"Possibly. Depends what you 'ave t'say about it," Brogan told her with a little grin, though he didn't elaborate as the meal was served.

Despite all his easygoing jokes earlier, Kell was incredibly nervous beside Kate. He hid it well, but she knew him well enough to see it.

"You don't have to ask her tonight, Kell." Kate said softly, knowing just how nervous he was with the entire situation. "We have time to wait."

"I lost the bet, didn't I?" Kell asked with a smile. "And your Da's waiting for it. Better sooner than later, or I'll just make myself more nervous." He would wait until the meal was done, and approach Julia as she and Brogan remained to talk with others in the hall as they always did.

Julia was talking to Boar while Brogan spoke with Emma after dinner, discussing something that was not terribly important. Julie held a twin on both hip, the girls already dozing as they waited to be tucked into bed properly. When she saw Kell approaching, she gave him a smile and said her goodbyes to Boar and Emma before she gave him her attention.

"What can I do for you, Kell?" Julia asked softly.

"Uh, well... I wanted to talk to you," Kell murmured as Brogan came to take Ashelin to make it easier on Julia. Kell had already retrieved the little box from Kate, and was nervously fidgeting with it in his pocket.

"Let's go to my chambers." Julia said as she took Heather with her while Brogan took Ashelin to bed.

When they entered her private room, Julia placed Heather on her cushioned chair and covered her with a blanket to let her sleep. Then she ushered Kell towards the fire to take a seat for himself.

"What can I do for you?" Julia asked, already knowing why he was there.

Kell didn't sit, instead facing Julia and taking a deep breath. "Julia. You and Brogan have known for some time how much I care about Kate. I love her, and I know it's already a forgone conclusion that I'm going to be working as her Lord Protector. But... with your blessing- and I wouldn't dare to ask her properly before she's eighteen... I'd like to walk with her at her coronation as her husband too." Kell offered her the little box and stone, holding his breath for her answer.

Julia saw just how nervous he was about the proposal and she smiled softly as he nearly trembled in front of her. "Kell, you are a fine young man. Kate has a stubborn streak a mile long and I know if I told you no, she would simply go and do it anyway. However, I do ask that you think about how young she really is. You've had a chance at s family and have lived much more than she has. I want the both of you to be absolutely certain that this is what you want."

"I know what I want, Julia," Kell told her quietly. "You don't get far in a life like mine being indecisive. But if Kate has any doubts at all, you know I won't push her. And married or not, she will always have her independence. I promise you that."

"I know." Julia said as Kell promised that he would always let Kate have her independence. "You have my permission, love. However, Brogan and I will not allow a wedding to happen until after she is 18. Her grandmother will want to plan a beautiful ceremony for her."

"I won't be asking her until after she's eighteen," Kell assured her, feeling a weight lift off his chest as he smiled and stepped forward to kiss her cheek. "Thank you, Julia. Your entire family has done so much for me..."

"You're my son, Kell. You'll always have a spot in our family." She said softly as he kissed her cheek. "I know that you'll make Katherine as happy as she could ever imagine."

"I'll certainly do my best." Kell hugged her gently before he left her side. It was only minutes later that Kate felt Kell's hands on her shoulders as she stood in the library. He pressed a kiss to her cheek and his arms wrapped around her waist, hugging her close.

"It went well?" Kate asked, glancing over her shoulder as her wolf silently snuck up on her and wrapped his strong arms around her waist. "Did she say yes?"

"She did, with the usual reminder that you're younger than me and she doesn't want us to rush." Kell said with a grin, suddenly so much more relaxed.

"We shouldn't rush." Kate commented as he grinned at her. "Rushing leads to bad things...as you and my parents remind me all the time. I definitely don't want to ruin this."

"I have all the time in the world. Patience is half of my job." Kell slipped round to face her, kissing her lips gently. "After all, someone has to balance your impatience."

"I'm not impatient." Kate protested, wrapping her arms around her wolf's neck. "I just have a different way of doing things."

"Yes, you do. Your way, and quickly," Kell teased, setting his forehead to her own. "By the way, I think your parents are crazy, letting an assassin pursue their daughter, the heir to the Scottish throne no less."

"You aren't an assassin anymore, Kell." Kate said as he rested his broad forehead against her own. "And I'm proud of the person that you've become."

"Of course I'm still an assassin. I just work in defense now," Kell assured her, his smile warming as she told him she was proud. "It's all because of you, you know. If you hadn't offered me the chance, I would've ended up wandering looking for contracts until I made more enemies than I could handle."

Kate let out a sigh as he told her that it was all because of her that he had changed himself. She nuzzled against him for a moment before she finally out to words what she was thinking.

"I don't know what kind of a wife I'll be, Kell." She said softly, opening herself up in a way to him that she had never done with anyone else. "I've never seen myself as a romantic sort of girl. When I think about being with you for the rest of my life, I like the idea...but it also terrifies me slightly."

"Don't change," Kell told her softly. "I want to marry you because I love what we have, not what we could have. I still want to be teasing you and chasing you around and sparring ten years from now, even if we have jobs to do. The only thing missing right now is being able to wake up beside you. But I can wait for that."

"You can wake up beside me now. We just can't do all the fun things that come with that until after we're married." Kate said with a grin. "Call me old fashioned, I guess. I love my Ma and Da too much to go against their rules."
