"Sam, even a simpleton knows when to admit defeat." Kate said as her brother stubbornly wanted to continue in the brutal training. "Accept it, lick your wounds, and move on. You'll only injure yourself if you continue."

"If I can't beat Kell, then I won't know if I can handle assassin's and spies," Sam insisted.

"You'll get quicker and stronger as you grow, Sam. If it makes you feel any better, you're on the right track. I certainly wasn't as fast as you when I was your age. And I paid for it dearly." Kell ruffled his hair fondly. "Keep practicing. I promise I'll help you be the best, but it takes time. After all, you're going to be protecting the people that mean the most to Kate."

Sam sighed, tossing his practice blade aside. "In a month, we're having a rematch."

"Agreed," Kell nodded.

Kate watched as her brother stormed off and shook her head. "I'll never understand him." She said as she turned back towards Kell, smiling as he came to kiss her. "I'll never understand you either."

"He and I understand each other, so it's fine." Kell draped an arm around her middle, an ear flicking at Brogan's chuckle off to the side where he'd been watching Sam.

"My Da is here to ruin everything." Kate commented, glancing towards her father with a grin as he leaned her head on her wolf's shoulder.

"Just keepin' yer Wolf honest," Brogan assured her, making Kell roll his eyes.

"I promised you she's the one in charge, Brogan."

"Keepin' her honest too," Brogan teased before stepping away.

"My Ma wants to have a celebration for my birthday. She said that I only turn 18 once." Kate commented as Brogan stepped away to leave them be. "I know it would make her happy, so I won't say no. You'll be there, right?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" Kell smiled down at her. "And I should tell you... I won't be proposing to you that day. It's your day, not mine, and I think your parents would kill me. I'll just have to wait til the next day."

"You know I was teasing when I said that." Kate said with a grin as he promised that he would propose the next day. "You don't have to propose at all if you don't want to. However, if you decide to, I would ask that you talk to my Da first. He already views you as a son, but his blessing is important."

"What if I told you I already asked? And he threatened to skin me personally?" Kell chuckled. "Well, only if I mess up."

"You did?" Kate asked, not really surprised that Kell had already planned everything out. "Well, he's been very good at keeping secrets."

"He told me I had to ask your mother. He didn't give me any answer." Kell leaned against a fence post with a smile.

"And what did Ma say? I'm sure that she was just as serious and mysterious as my Da." Kate said, grinning at Kell as he leaned against the fence post.

"I haven't asked yet. I'm honestly nervous about it. But I think I'll ask her tonight after some sweet-talking."

"Just think about the outcome and the promise that the future has when you do ask her." Kate said as she wrapped her arms around his waist and held her wolf tightly. "And if she says no, I'll wait until I'm high queen. No one can tell me no then."

"I don't believe she'll say no. I'm expecting more of a 'not yet' kind of answer, even after you're eighteen." Kell let an arm draped around her, lifting the other hand to stroke her cheek. "I can hardly blame her. I know I wouldn't let my daughter run off with a former assassin, especially so young."

"I can give her a year. Maybe two years. But after that, I can't make any promises." Kate said as Kell stroked her cheek gently. "Although, I might be sappy enough to say that I would wait until the end of the world for you, Khelt."

"Waiting isn't your style," Kell grinned. "You'd try and only make it a few years at most. You're impatient and reckless and stubborn. And I love it no matter how much trouble it's going to cause me."

Kate chuckled and kissed her wolf, holding him tightly with a sigh. He was exactly right about everything. She might be able to wait a year, but that would be it. The quicker they got married, the better.

Kell wrapped his free arm around her then, relaxing back as she kissed him. She was as easy to get frustrated with as she was to love. "Just promise me we won't lose any of this when we settle in Edinburgh," he murmured before kissing her once more.

"Well, you'll be my Lord Protector. Are you going to let them dominate all of my time? Or are you going to make sure that I have time in my schedule cleared so that my husband won't get angry?" Kate teased, grinning as he kissed her again until her toes curled in her boots.

"Angry? No. But I will make sure you have enough free time not to go insane," Kell said with a little grin and one more kiss. He liked to push a little more each time they had a passionate moment, but he never went too far. He understood that Kate wanted to wait.

"You make me burn, Kell." She whispered softly as their last kiss ended and her face flushed as red as her hair. "And I think that you are the most evil creature on this earth for it too."

"I'll take that as a compliment," Kell whispered against her ear, pressing a heated kiss to her neck before stepping away with a little smirk.

"Khelt." Kate murmured as he pressed a kiss against her throat and took a step away. "Don't overstep yourself. You still have a while to go before we can do anything like that."
