Out of curiosity are you particular about where you are when you write a story? Do you have a certain room in your house/flat that you prefer to write in?

For me, I find that music really helps and I get easily distracted by stuff like the phone and telly so I make sure everything's turned off. I could never take my laptop to a cafe and just write because I would spend all my time watching the world go by and wouldn't get anything done!

I write my stories in cafeterias, at the bus stop waiting for the bus, on my bed at night, at the bank waiting in queue, in McDonalds while munching on a Quarter Pounder, on the beach while burning my skin to a delicate shade of crimson, on the bus going somewhere (although the terrible condition of the roads in this area makes the bus jump up and down, causing my words to look very weird), and sometimes at my desk; typing everything down into my computer.

in the mood

Not to sound glib, but since I don't have a laptop, I write where my computer is... in the computer room. :) Sometimes my stories are so clear that it doesn't matter what is going on around me, nothing is a distraction.

With the first story I posted here, The Secret, the main characters first met in college 20 years ago, so it helped me to put on some 80's music while I was writing, not because there were any details in the story which were relevant to the 1980's, but because it helped put me mentally in that time period.

I write wherever and whenever the mood strikes me. I carry paper in my purse so that if I think of something I can writie it down. Some of my best ideas come to me when I'm camping. Maybe because of the peace and quiet and the being out in the woods with no distractions, I don't know but it seem really easy to write then. I also keep paper by my bed, I always seem to think of something as I'm trying to fall asleep.

For the most part my stories are written in my head before I ever sit down to a computer keyboard. I find I mull a story over in my mind for days or weeks, and this can be done anywhere and everywhere.

However, when the time comes to actually type the idea out I find using my desktop with classical music playing in the background and a good wine keeping me company is what works best for me. No television, and if the phone rings, I take a complete break and talk or simply ignore it and let the machine pick up.

Either sitting in front of my computer or scribbling in a notebook on my bed. I have actually got into the habit of taking my notebook to work and writing during quiet periods.

Hmmmmmmmm

In the office mainly, for a bit of peace and quiet from the family, I partitioned the end of the garage off to make an office ages ago for work purposes, and now use it as my writing room as well.
The family don't butt in, but they can be a bit loud at times, especially when the kids start aguing over what goes on the telly in the sitting room.

I occasionally call the wife into the office for advice on a line or para I may be writing from a womans point of view, other than that I sit alone and do my stuff.

Dear Pop,
You seem like the ideal person to contribute a few verses for the next "Batchelor's Hand" epic by the DurtGurl Group.
