I know there has to be more than a few of us on here who are interested in eventually getting a story published.

I'm curious, has anyone had any success getting published?

I'm also curious as far as those who have been published, especially when is comes to smashwords and amazon what kind of material is within the boundries and what kind of material tends to generate success.

Anyway, thanks for your time.

I publish my own at Smashwords. They take just about everything, except underage. They don't treat erotica any different than mainstream except you need to specify that it is erotica.

Now over on Kindle, they will take your erotic stories, but if you are not a mainstream author on the New York's best sellers list, they usually keep your independent erotica from showing up in broad searches.

Getting a publisher involved, well, I never tried going that way, there are several authors who have though. Maybe they may get in touch.

Good luck.

Thank you, that is good to know. It really sounds like I should focus on Smashwords.

From what I've seen on Twitter most who publish on both make more with Smashwords.

Amazon keeps a larger percentage and has far more readers, but they hide Erotica from most searches.

Also when you publish on Amazon, there's a non compete for 9 months so you can't sell the story anywhere else. Smashwords doesn't have that requirement.

Again these are things I remember seeing on twitter from other authors. I have no personal experience with either.

Only if you elect to join their bullshit exclusive publishing bullshit Kindle Unlimited. Stay away from that bullshit for sure.

It depends on what you mean by publish...

I was able to connect with a website owner who liked doing 1930's artwork for erotica called Pulp Erotica. He liked doing the artwork, but his website fans wanted him to also include short stories. So...I wrote the erotic stories, and he did the story cover art, so it worked out well.

That was erotica...

I have published a few non-erotica books, and found it is easier to do it myself. Like anything, if you do the work yourself, there is no hoops to jump through, rules to follow, or money to pay them, BUT you must do all the work yourself.

To publish my last book for example, I was quoted $3500 for 100 copies! YIKES! Worse yet, I could only have (6) photos.

But if you do YouTube Searches, you can see where it is easily done. Since I am talking about real print books here, it means having the right computer printer, making some jigs to help align the pages, but book binding is relatively easy, and glossy covers are $2 per piece at Staples. I print mine in 10 book runs, and then sell them. When I run out, I print another batch of 10.

I do suggest getting a profession proofreader to look over your book, with freelancers charging $750 per book, but it is money well spent.

Note: Hard Cover books are harder to bind, but can still be done homemade...
