Anyone know what sort of paperwork one needs when driving into Mexico? Just a license? Or a passport?

You'll likely need either a passport or an original birth certificate and a picture ID.

Forget getting into Mexico, just make sure you have whatever it takes to get back OUT of Mexico!! ;)
Usually a passport and driver's license will be more than enough.

be caful

You need to know what is illegal before you go and get car insurance for Mexico. We had a man from our town spent 180 days and don't know how much $ to get him out all because he had some ammunition in his truck.

At the border, photo ID.

Flying into airports further south, I prefer to have my passport.

It's an open border. Most people are just asked their citizenship upon returning, if you ran into a hard ass, your home drivers license should do.

If you have a nice car, don't take it to Mexico! Rent a car and pay for the insurance!

How far down are you going?

I moved to San Diego last fall, and have driven into Mexico many times and never had a problem. Yes, a Driver's license is absolutely necessary but also bring your passport in case of a snafu.

If on the weekend be ready for long long lines back to the US
