After a long break from writing smut, I am back with two chapters pending, and the wait to see them go live is killing me! But really excited to be writing again I did get some lovely comments for what I have shared. What keeps long-time writers going?

Wanting to write. It's that simple for me.

@smutarranger,
Welcome back dear colleague,
Imagination, ideas and "plot bunnies" - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. ;)
Respectfully,
D.

Welcome back to the fold. I have not been writing for long (started earlier this year), so I'm not actually qualified to answer your question, but I will anyway.

Right now, I write to get better at it. I hope to keep getting better at it for a long time. I've got a long way to go to be the writer I would like to be. Probably longer than I have years left.

And I write because I enjoy meeting the people. I don't mean the people I meet here on the forum, although that is very gratifying. I have met people here who are important to me and I suspect I would hang out here for quite a while longer if I stopped writing or just publishing on the site.

No. I mean the characters I create. I am a very character oriented story teller, when my characters don't click with me, the story is not good. Characters live in my head for a week or maybe months while I write their story. In a longer piece, even the supporting characters become independent sentient entities in there. Most of them move off when I finish their story and that's like having a friend move to another country. If you really like them, it is possible to visit for a while, bt you know you probably won't. A few days after I finish a major work, I often have a wave of sadness, as so many friends move away all at once.

Thank you for the welcome and the lovely reply! I can definitely relate to wanted to get better at the craft of writing.
