Ive just started a blog on Wordpress.
I'm new to the software and blogging as such, so any tips on attracting readers?

Links.

I've been told, and it makes a lot of sense, that the most people will get to any site through links. They pretty much have to, unless they know of your page and use google to find the link for them.
Spread links to your site generously wherever you think it's appropriate, just try not to overdo it and anoy people by spamming links where they are not really of any relevance.

Another good way is to have your site listed by google, they don't get every small site cataloged automatically, but you can apply it manually. There should be a fair number of guides out there on how that's done.

There are a few add-ons that help the crawlers find and index your site. I use one called XML tools. There's a lot you can learn about SEO that will help you in the rankings, and links - as previously stated - are definitely helpful. Be aware that Google penalizes "scrapper" sites, so if you post original content you'll fare better than posting a ton of links, excerpts, and crap like that.

Also, within the Wordpress software, make sure you pick the option to make your blog searchable; you should also have options in your control panel to pick keywords whatnot that will help with rankings.

What's your blog about?

On the link front, it can also help to post links to popular blogs that complement your blog's subject matter. For instance, if your blog is on BDSM, you might want to link to some popular blogs on bondage, domination, male and female submission, toys, etc.

It kind of depends on whether you're running your blog for fun or for profit. If for fun, then do some basic SEO research and follow those recommendations. If for profit, then you need to do some intensive study into SEO and set your site/blog up to have as many elements that are key to being at the top of searches for your type of content.

If you don't know already, Google is the top dog of the search world, so what they want to see in a quality website is going to rule over what the other search engines look for. We've been running for 2-1/2 years and it's been a struggle to keep up with the constant changes Google makes, while we remain in the top spots at Bing and Yahoo, among others.

Last October Google installed a new set of search rules (Google "panda" and "pandalized" ) that really turned things upside down.

tips for getting a blog read:

1. have good quality content on a reliable update frequency, not "whenever i feel like it". write several blogs and have a few for when time is short but you need to keep your schedule. this is important. all the SEO wizardry in the world won't do fucking thing to bring bag a reader who doesn't care about what he or she is reading.

2. engage readers. if someone comments, always always always respond to it, unless it's SEO spam. then blow it away. similarly: install akismet to help avoid spam comments.

3. comment on other blogs. nobody will read it if they don't know you've posted it. reading other blogs is also a very good way to build rapport and network with other bloggers on related subjects, as well as seeing if anyone else is talking about what you're discussing.

4. social media. if you're on FB, linkedin, google+ or twitter, add the widgets that auto-post to FB/twitter.

5. SEO. yes, SEO is useful (sigh). make sure blog titles are keyword/SEO-relevant and that your keywords appear higher in the blog entry than later.
