During my pregnancy the doctor discovered I had Gestational diabetes, shortly after giving birth it went away. They say that any other pregnancy I will have will more than likely result with the same (not planning any more kids, actually scheduled for a Tubal Ligations next week). Was also told that it may come back again. Now my question is, are there any women here that have had it and did it come back later on in life?

I had it for all 3 of my pregnancies.

Being that I also put on a lot of weight,I was told that if I was not careful,I would get it.

So far,I have not got it,and hopefully I wont.

I had it with my third (and last) pregnancy. I also have a family history of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes. The doctor said that both factors increase my risk of becoming diabetic. So far, I'm not.

My sister in law (the not so bright baby factory) developed it on the 2nd pregnancy, ignored it through the 4th and it became permanant s/p the 5th, (God told them to single handedly "replenish" the earth with children).

LovetoRead touched on one of the few factors that I know of, excess body weight. Continued multiple pregnancies and family hx are the other two. Logically, diet would play a role as well as it does with the dx of Hypoglicemia.

According to my (barely smarter than his wife) brother if you are aware and work hard to avoid predetermining factors you have a very good shot at skating through life without the full blown development of Diabetes.

Thanx for the replies ladies.

Backyard sweaty, being that I am a sensible eater (have my moments of 'salt 'n vinager-rice chip attacks' though....damn their great) it is good to hear that my chances of contacting diabetes again are not so high. Thanx.
