I am mourning Gerald Levert right now. He passed away November 10th. Ed Bradley who was on 60 minutes for many years passed away last week, I believe. I will miss him too, but not like Gerald Levert.

Some of you may not know who he is, but he is the son of Eddie Levert who is the lead singer of the O'Jays. One of my favorites groups.

Gerald and his brothers formed Levert in the 80s, and I remember they had the sone Casanova, which was a great dance song at the clubs back in the day.

"I ain't much on Casanova, Romeo and I ain't never been friends: can't you I really, really love ya, gonna tell it you ya time and time again...."

Sad. With Luther and Barry White gone, it just is not the same. He was only 40 years old, a baby.

I knew about Ed Bradley, and I was sad to hear it. I watched 60 Minuites for many years, and even watched his reports from Viet Nam, too. He was very much a class act. I watched 60 Minutes' special and it brought back nice memories. I especailly enjoyed his interview with Mohamad Ali and the joke Ali pulled on him.

I hadn't heard of Gerald Levert or of Levert the group. I work with some black people who were tallking about him and Bradley dying. It feels kind of strange not knowing who he was, me being a musician and all. I guess we all have our path and mine just didn't include Levert.

I do know of the O'Jays though, and when they said his dad was a member, it kind of brought it all into perspective for me. But, R&B just wasn't my thing. I was a white rock-n-roller with blinders on.

After listening to a little of his music, I can hear what people loved. He had a style somewhat like Barry White or Luther Vandrose, full of soul, heartache and love. And, his lyrics told that same story.

He sounded a lot like his father.

I grew up listening to the Ojays and then I was a mother and while my daughter was growing up and my mother graciously kicked me out of the house, I had a second chance at club mode. That was my Levert period.

Well I was and am R & B to my soul. I listen to a broad spectrum of music cause my mother taught it to me. She took me to concerts, plays, so I love all kinds of music. But country and western escapes me. The beat just does not call to me.

Music has changed a lot, in the last 10-20 years. Not just how it sounds, but also categories.

When you say country and western, you are dating yourself a little. Now, it's called country, or the new country and old country style.

Saying the old name...country and western, I understand completely what you are talking about. It's mostly about your dog dying, or your woman cheaitin' on you with another man...or maybe with your dog.

There is also a twang in the voice that is somewhat disturbing, and the size of women's hair styles are all quite large and full of hair spray. Not to mention the spangles on not just the women's clothes, but the men's, too. Oh, and some of the men's hair can also be rather tall, if they aren't weaing a cowboy hat to cover up the fact that they don't have hair up there. Buck Owens is one singer that reminds me of this style. And, mostly anybody else in country at that time. My ears are ringing, just thinking about it.

see I do not care what it is called now. It just does not appeal to me. Keeping up with fashionable names is not my thing either. To me it is all about the beat.

I calls 'em as I sees em. You know my mantra by now. Being an adult , no one can change me unless I choose to change. Country and Western is what it is, and Country and Western is what it will stay. It ain't in MY house.

Add James (both Rick *, and * Brown) and Ray Charles to that group and the first decade of 2000 has pretty much sucked. So, here one from an old school girl to us old school folks Eb.

Thug life
Makavelli
Thug life

Twenty-two dubs up in the sky
Spread your angel wings and fly
A comet soars across the sky
Sent to give the whole earth light

Brother, I ain't mad cause you made my body shake
Came and went so fast, you might need a resolution
Reasons for my life and the places that I've seen
Rollin' with my crew keeps me rockin' till tomorrow

Makavelli never lied
Throw your hands up say "He's for real"
And Aaliyah never lied
Lemme hear you holla "She's for real"
Mom and commy never lied
Give it up for heartbeat
And Stevie Wonder never lied
Talk about the prophet now he's for real

Told you he was ride or die
Made you laugh and made you cry
I'm gonna count from one to ten
And dust it off and try again

Sister, I ain't mad cause you made my body shake
Came and went so fast and I need a resolution
Reasons for my life, feeling all my deepest grace
Rollin' with my crew keeps me rockin' keep me rockin'

Makavelli never lied
Throw it up, your hands, say "He's for real"
And Joni Mitchell never lied
Lemme me hear ya holla now "She's for real"
And Ariah Ari never lied
Give it up ya heartbeat Props for real
And Bob Marley never lied
Talk about the prophet now he's for real

Pretty beauty please don't go
Stay and satisfy my soul
Make me high when I feel low
What's this need for neo-soul

Blessed are the righteous ones
Pure and heartened peaceful ones
Know that when your life is done
Heaven, it lasts always

Brother I ain't mad cause you made my body shake
Came and went so fast and I need a resolution
Reasons for my life and the fine lines on my face
Rollin' with my crew keeps me rockin' till tomorrow

Makavelli never lied
Throw it up, your hands, say "he's for real"
And Marvin Gaye would never lie
Lemme hear ya holla now he's for real
And Lauryn Hill would never lie
Give it up, the heartbeat, props for real
And you and I would never lie
Talk about the things we truly feel

Makavelli never lied
Throw it up, your hands, say he's for real
And John Lennon never lied
Lemme hear ya holla now he's for real
Chaka-kan would never lie
Give it up the heartbeat, props for real
And Jesus Christ would never lie
Talk about the prophet, now he's for real

Buffalo soldier here I come
Left us his redemption song
And joy is found from within
How sweet my soul aquariums

Beautiful ones gone too soon
Would you go back to the moon (Never)
To the stars where angels host
And to the one who loves ya most?

Infinitely, talking bout eternity
They never lie
Forever, forever
Never lie
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera
