Given that the new Congressman George Santos has admitted his lies and dishonesty: What should he do about it? What should Congress do about it? What should his party do about it, bearing in mind that the party presented Santos to the voters as if he was an honest candidate. Obviously the electors themselves are in no position to do anything about the situation without Congressional or Party leadership.

I am particularly interested in the response of Republicans because I guess that of Democrats is fairly predictable.

The Constitution is instructive:

"Each House [of Congress] may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member."

However... is lying prior to becoming a Member considered disorderly behavior? I'm not sure that the House should have jurisdiction over what happened before it gained jurisdiction. See, e.g., Alcee Hastings.

If lying while a member isn't enough to expel or discipline a member (Harry Reid's lies were particularly egregious), then lying while campaigning is a nonstarter in this regard.

The House theoretically could refuse to seat him, but I doubt that will happen because, again, the rest of them are just as guilty of violating the rules while campaigning in one way or another.

Basically Santos is a scumbag. That the rest of Congress are also scumbags only means he'll fit right in. As for punishment, don't worry; people like Santos usually get caught doing something else really nasty at some point down the road and often go to jail for it.

As far as I'm concerned this falls into the category of "mind your own business." He may be a lying scumbag but it's up to the voters of his district to do something about it. It's not a national issue.

His Republican district party did a "marvelous" job of vetting him. They have officially disowned him, but they have egg on their faces as well.

He totally misrepresented who he was, so, yes, he should just be stripped of the seat. A strong Speaker (as Pelosi has done in the past) would call him in and he'd resign before he left that office.

That is your prerogative though the entirety of this forum spends loads of time discussing members of Congress from outside their districts and complaints about them. I'm sure you've been involved in some of those discussions.

So you don’t care about what any candidate does before they are in that office?

It is a national issue though. It’s a stain upon every value we supposedly hold so dear.

I’m sure if this guy was a democrat the pout rage would be absurdly worse from you and your ilk on this forum. Never mind what the fox scum would be doing..

Santos is still lying, it's who he is. He claimed he voted for bills in congress before he was sworn in, he claimed he had been sworn in before he had been sworn in.

He's making out that he was a star volleyball player for a college he wasn't in, he's wanted in another country for fraud. Only McCarthy is supporting him, which tells us all we need to know about McCarthy.

Just remember that the orange POS’s and Herschel Walker’s, etc’s, outrageous LIES and disgusting behavior were well known before millions of MAGAts voted for them.

It isn’t all on McCarthy or Santos.

They and others are perfectly reflective representatives of MAGAt voters

SAD!!!

Like Biden is the bright shining light of truth.

Biden lied, met 16 times with Hunter's business partners.

There are 3 certainties in life: death, taxes, and that all politicians lie. It's just a matter of why and what about.

People voted him in, scumbag or not. The speaker can refuse him a seat on any committees for unethical behavior but till the house votes on disciplinary action to include expulsion he's in like Flint. I don't believe NY has a recall option for voters. Powell vs McCormack

As of right now if shame won't work on getting him to resign there is no mechanism to oust Santos, but I can imagine that he'll have a truly rough road ahead of him in any reelection campaign just from a Republican primary challenger much less the Democrats in the general.

Political spin is one thing.

Outright lying about extremely sensitive / serious issues is where I draw the line.

“Republicans” on the other hand have no qualms about lying and liars when it comes to even the most serious of issues.

SAD!!!

Both chambers make their own rules, Article 1, section 5 clause 2; 2/3rds majority vote to expel, ain't going to happen.

Laz thinks only pubs play dirty ROTFLMFAO

Maxine Waters should have been expelled from the house for inciting violence and Jury tampering during the Floyd court case.

Criminal investigators are already onto him on his financials. As long as he stays around, though, he exists as a useful reference point for Democrats.

Yet meanwhile, the POS helped elect McCarthy weaker of the house and is allowed to vote on other significant matters.

SAD!!!

And Santos's continued presence exists as a reflection of McCarthy's weakness and incompetence for all to see. Pelosi no doubt would have enjoyed Anthony Weiner's votes, but she called him into her office and kept him there until he resigned. She showed leadership and competence. Through Santos McCarthy shows how lacking he is.

Don't make Pelosi out to be some fucking hero, Pelosi didn't have a choice, Weiner was a convicted sex offender and served 18 months in prison.

Let me add that he was caught sexting women in 2011 and resign from congress.
