Speaking for myself, being in the same city can be far apart. But, in your dreams, you can be together. I have known many people who are together in the same room but they are miles apart from each other. It takes two people who are in the same world to appreciate the distance, but they make up for it in their hearts. All in all, distance is a state of mind, except for when you want to touch someone and feel their warm breath upon your skin.
